Phantasy Star Portable (2009) was a landmark title for the PSP, essentially bringing the massive, addictive “grind” of Phantasy Star Universe (PS2/PC) into a handheld format. Developed by Alfa System and Sega, it became a massive hit in Japan, helping to pioneer the “four-player local hunting” craze alongside Monster Hunter.

  • Relation: It is a companion to Phantasy Star Universe, taking place between the original game and its expansion, Ambition of the Illuminus.

The Plot: The SEED Aftermath

Set in the Gurhal System, the war against the alien SEED has technically ended, but “remnants” are still causing havoc.

  • The Guardian: You create a custom character who joins the Guardians, a space-faring police force.

  • Vivienne: You are partnered with a new, experimental CAST (android) named Vivienne. Her journey to understand human emotions forms the heart of the story.

  • The Mission: You travel to the planets Parum, Neudaiz, and Moatoob to investigate a new terrorist threat while Vivienne learns about the “flesh-and-blood” world.

Key Features: Deep Customization

  • Four Races: 1. Humans: Balanced stats; no major weaknesses. 2. Newmans: Low health but extremely high “Technic” (magic) power. 3. Cast: Androids with high accuracy and the ability to use “SUV Weapons” (massive orbital lasers/cannons). 4. Beasts: High physical strength; can “Nanoblast” into a giant, invulnerable monster.

  • Class Swapping: You can change your “Type” (Hunter, Ranger, Force) at any time in the hub.

  • The Lobby System: Unlike the console versions, there is no “walking” around cities. Everything is menu-based for speed, letting you jump into missions instantly.

  • Partner Machinery: You have a personal bot in your room that you “feed” items to. Eventually, it evolves and can join you in battle.

Secrets & Pro Tips

Phantasy Star is all about the “rare drop” and the “True Ending.”

How to get the True Ending

Your choices in dialogue with Vivienne determine the ending. To get the best one:

  • Always choose the most “empathetic” or “human” answers.

  • You must complete specific side missions involving her before finishing the final Chapter.

  • Reward: Getting the True Ending unlocks the Vivienne Double Saber, one of the best mid-game weapons.

The “Rare” Hunting Strategy

  • Title System: The game has a “Title” menu (achievements). Each title you earn gives you a physical reward, often high-tier weapons or “Room Decorations” you can’t get elsewhere.

  • Weapon Fusion: You can upgrade the “Grind” level of your weapons. Be careful—in this version, weapons can break/reset if a grind fails at high levels!

Secret Codes (Vision Phone)

In your room, access the Vision Phone and enter these for exclusive items:

  • 8741 0269: Setsu-Gekka (Powerful Sword)

  • 2548 7914: Soul Eater (Classic Scythe)

  • 4891 2635: Blackbull (High-end Rifle)

The Good

  • Incredible Depth: With over 800 items and 200+ types of monsters, the amount of content is staggering for a 2009 handheld game.

  • Solo-Friendly: While it shines in 4-player Ad-Hoc, the AI “Partner” system is robust. You can bring NPCs from the story along to help you tank and heal.

  • Customization: The “Create-a-Character” system is one of the best on the PSP.

The Bad

  • The Camera: Lacks a second analog stick, so you have to tap L to reset the camera or use the D-Pad “claw” grip.

  • Repetitive Environments: You will see the same grassy fields and metallic hallways hundreds of times while farming for that 1% drop-rate weapon.

  • Loading: If playing on the original UMD, the loading screens before missions can be quite long.
