Blast Chamber (1996) on the original PlayStation (PS1/PSX) is an inventive competitive puzzle-action title developed by Attention to Detail (ATD) and published by Activision. Pitched as a futuristic bloodsport set inside a rotating cube, it was one of the earliest games to utilize the PlayStation Multitap for 4-player local couch multiplayer.
⚙️ Core Mechanics & Gameplay Features
Rotating Cube Arenas: Battles take place inside a fully 3D, sealed cubical chamber. Striking specific wall switches rotates the entire room 90 degrees in real time, shifting gravity and causing players, obstacles, and power-ups to tumble across the surfaces.
The C4 Bomb Rule & Timer: Each contestant wears C4 explosive packs fitted with a countdown timer. Players battle to grab the central C4 Crystal and carry it to their color-coded target zone to add precious seconds to their own timer while depleting opponents' clocks.
Explosive Elimination: When a player's personal countdown hits zero, their suit detonates, eliminating them from the round. The last astronaut standing—or the player with the most time remaining when the master match clock expires—wins.
Interactive Hazards & Power-Ups: Dynamic map elements include spikes, lava, directional launch pads, and disruptor power-ups (such as the Magnet, Hammer, and Pass-the-Bomb gadgets).
4-Player Local Multitap Support: Features full support for the PlayStation Multitap, allowing 4 human players to compete simultaneously in free-for-all or team-based modes.
⭐ Short Review: A Cult Classic Party Game
The Good
Unique Gameplay Concept: The combination of gravity-shifting cube rotation and ticking-bomb arena mechanics makes matches frantic and unique.
Exceptional 4-Player Multiplayer: One of the best early-era PS1 Multitap titles, offering high-stakes party action and shifting leads up to the final second.
The Bad
Disorienting Camera Angles: Rapid chamber rotations can occasionally disorient players or obscure line-of-sight during high-speed scrambles.
Limited Single-Player Longevity: Solo play against AI opponents lacks the chaotic charm and psychological mind-games of local multiplayer.
