Manhunt 2 (2007) is arguably the most controversial game in the PSP library. Originally slapped with an “AO” (Adults Only) rating that effectively banned it from retail, Rockstar Games had to implement a heavy “blur filter” during its signature executions to secure an “M” rating. Despite the censorship, it remains a technical marvel for the PSP, pushing the hardware to deliver a dark, psychological horror experience.

The Plot: The Project

The story is a departure from the “Snuff Film” theme of the first game, leaning into government conspiracies and split personalities.

  • The Protagonist: You play as Daniel Lamb, a scientist who wakes up in the Dixmor Asylum for the Criminally Insane during a power outage.

  • The Companion: You are guided by Leo Kasper, a mysterious and sociopathic fellow inmate who teaches you how to kill to survive.

  • The Twist: As Danny and Leo hunt down the members of “The Project”—the organization that experimented on Danny—the line between reality and hallucination begins to blur.

Key Features: Stealth & Execution

  • Environmental Executions: Marked by skull icons on the map. These allow you to use objects in the world (telephones, toilets, manhole covers) to kill hunters in gruesome ways.

  • Execution Tiers: The longer you hold the attack button behind an enemy, the more brutal the kill becomes:

    • Level 1 (White): Hasty/Quick.

    • Level 2 (Yellow): Violent.

    • Level 3 (Red): Gruesome.

  • Shadow Stealth: Uses a light/dark system. When Danny is in deep shadow, his icon turns blue, making him invisible to enemies unless they walk directly into him.

  • Interactive Hiding: When an enemy searches a shadow you are hiding in, a “Steady Breathing” minigame appears, requiring you to keep a cursor inside a circle to stay quiet.

Secrets and Hidden Content

Manhunt 2 is packed with hidden rankings and secret unlockables that most casual players miss:

  • The 5-Star Ranking: To get a 5-star rating on a level, you must finish it quickly and perform as many “Red” (Gruesome) executions as possible.

  • Hidden Collectibles: Every level contains a hidden Project Folder. Finding these provides lore about the “Pickman Project” and Danny’s past.

  • Unlockable Bonus Levels:

    • “Release Therapy”: This is the “True Ending” level, unlocked only after completing the game. It features a final showdown between Danny and his inner demons.

  • Weapon Variety: While most people stick to the plastic bag or glass shard, the game features secret “Environmental” weapons like the Syringe, Meat Cleaver, and even a Chainsaw in the later stages.

  • The “Uncensored” Code (Myth vs. Fact): While rumors of a button code to remove the execution blur persisted for years, it does not exist in the retail version. The only way to see the uncensored kills is via the fan-patched ISO or the original PC release.

Short Review: A Grimy Masterpiece

The Good

  • Atmosphere: The grainy, “found footage” aesthetic works perfectly on the PSP’s screen, masking technical limitations and enhancing the horror.

  • Sound Design: The binaural audio is incredible; playing with headphones is a must to hear the hunters whispering and the squelching sound effects.

  • Solid Port: Rockstar Leeds did an amazing job—the game features almost all the content of the PS2 version with very little compromise.

The Bad

  • The Blur Filter: If playing the official retail version, the heavy “rave-like” filters during kills can be distracting and make it hard to see what is actually happening.

  • Gunplay: Like the first game, the shooting mechanics are clunky. The game is much better when played as a pure stealth title.

  • Morally Heavy: It is an intentionally unpleasant and nihilistic game. It’s not for everyone.
