Every Extend Extra (2006) is a “rhythmic explosive” puzzle game and a spiritual successor to the freeware PC hit Every Extend. Produced by Tetsuya Mizuguchi (the mind behind Rez and Lumines), it turns the concept of a “shoot ’em up” on its head: instead of shooting enemies, you blow yourself up to trigger massive chain reactions.

Game Story & Premise

Typical of Q Entertainment titles, the “story” is abstract and told through pulsating visuals and synesthesia-heavy themes.

Back Cover Description:

“Experience a blast of pure synesthesia! In Every Extend Extra, your life is your only weapon. Navigate through a kaleidoscopic world of rhythm and light, where the goal isn’t to survive, but to time your own destruction for maximum impact.

Detonate your ship to trigger spectacular chain reactions, clearing the screen and syncing your score to an infectious electronic soundtrack. Master the art of the ‘Combo,’ collect power-ups to extend your time, and challenge massive bosses in a rhythmic battle for high-score supremacy. It’s not just a game—it’s an explosion of the senses.”

Gameplay Mechanics: The Art of the Suicide

  • Self-Destruction: You control a small ship. When you press the button to “fire,” you actually detonate your ship.

  • Chain Reactions: The blast from your explosion destroys nearby enemies, which then explode themselves. If their explosions hit other enemies, the chain continues.

  • Quicken: Destroying certain enemies drops “Quicken” items. These speed up the background music and the movement of enemies, allowing for faster, denser chain reactions.

  • The Trade-off: Every time you blow up, you lose a “stock” (life). You must earn enough points to gain extra lives faster than you spend them.

Secrets & Unlocks

1. Secret Modes

Mode How to Unlock
Boss Attack Complete the Arcade Mode on any difficulty.
R4 Mode Clear the game once. This features music and visuals inspired by Ridge Racer 4.
Original Mode A faithful recreation of the original PC freeware version of Every Extend.

2. Hidden Music Tracks

The game features a Skin system similar to Lumines. You unlock new skins (backgrounds/music) by reaching certain stages in the Arcade mode or hitting high-score milestones.

Key Tips for High Scores

  • Don’t Rush: If you blow up immediately, you’ll only catch a few enemies. Wait for the screen to fill up, or “herd” the enemies into a cluster before detonating.

  • Watch the “BPM”: As you collect Quicken items, the music gets faster. This makes the game harder but increases your score multiplier exponentially.

  • Boss Tactics: You can’t just spam explosions on bosses. You must time your detonate so the tail end of a chain reaction hits the boss’s weak point for massive damage.

Short Review: Pure Visual Caffeine

The Good

  • The Soundtrack: Features incredible electronic tracks that sync perfectly with the gameplay.

  • Unique Hook: There truly isn’t another game that feels quite like this; it’s a “suicide shmup” that rewards careful timing over twitch reflexes.

  • Visuals: It’s a showcase for the PSP’s screen, filled with vibrant colors and particle effects.

The Bad

  • Steep Learning Curve: It can be confusing at first. New players often run out of lives by blowing up too often without building a combo.

  • Visual Overload: At high “Quicken” levels, the screen becomes so chaotic that it can be hard to see where your ship is.
