Valhalla Knights (2006) is an action role-playing game developed by K2 LLC and published by Marvelous Interactive in Japan and XSEED Games in North America. Designed for deep customization enthusiasts, it blends classic dungeon crawler tropes with real-time, party-based action combat on the PSP.
Story & Premise: The Forgotten Land
Set in a land once shared by humans, elves, dwarves, and halflings, the world was plunged into darkness following a war between the Dark Lord and the gods. The continent was sealed away, becoming a lawless realm known as the "Forgotten Land."
You control an amnesiac protagonist who awakens in this cursed territory. To unravel your identity and discover the truth behind the seal, you must recruit mercenaries, form an adventurer party, and navigate treacherous multi-floor dungeons.
Core Mechanics & Party Systems
Massive 6-Member Combat Parties: Unlike most portable action-RPGs that cap your team at 3 or 4 fighters, Valhalla Knights lets you take up to 6 characters into active combat simultaneously.
Deep Character Creation: Custom party members can be built across 5 playable races (Human, Elf, Dwarf, Halfling, Machine) and multiple base/advanced job classes (Fighter, Mage, Priest, Thief, Knight, Samurai, Ninja, and Anchor).
Multi-Classing & Sub-Classes: Characters can switch jobs and retain learned skills, allowing for intricate hybrid builds (such as a spellcasting Knight or a stealthy Samurai).
Visible Equipment & Looting: Every piece of armor, weapon, and accessory equips visibly on character models, driving a heavy loot-and-craft cycle.
Seamless Field Transitions: Enemies appear as roaming avatars in dungeon corridors. Contacting an enemy shifts the camera into a closed real-time battle arena where you control one character while AI handles the remaining five based on tactical tactics presets.
Short Review: Massive Depth, Heavy Grind
The Good
Unmatched Customization: The combination of 5 races, 12+ classes, multi-class skill persistence, and visible gear offers hundreds of hours of team-building depth.
Large-Scale Party Battles: Controlling a full 6-person squad in real-time battles creates an engaging, chaotic combat loop.
The Bad
Extreme Grind & Backtracking: Progress requires significant level grinding and repeated trips through labyrinthine dungeons to farm gold and gear.
Minimalist Storytelling: The plot takes a back seat to dungeon crawling, with sparse dialogue and generic quest setups.
