Warhammer: Battle for Atluma (2006) on the PlayStation Portable is not a traditional tabletop miniature simulator, nor is it a strategy RPG. Instead, developed by JV Games and published by Namco Bandai, it is a direct digital port of WarCry—the popular Warhammer Fantasy physical collectible card game (CCG) produced by Sabertooth Games.
🃏 Core Mechanics:
The WarCry RulesetBecause it is a literal translation of the physical CCG, players construct decks and battle through three distinct phases: Muster Phase: Players use gold to buy units from their Army deck, deploying infantry, cavalry, flyers, and character cards, alongside magical attachments and banners. Combat Phase: You match your deployed units against your opponent's.
A speed hierarchy determines block priorities (Flyers > Cavalry > Infantry). Players then play Action/Ability cards to boost their unit's strength, lower the opponent's stats, or cast spells using Tactics and Spell points. Resolution & Rout Checks: After cards are played, dice rolls are added to the final strength totals. The losing card is discarded, and "rout checks" are performed against the unit's Leadership stat. If a unit fails the rout check, the winning unit can launch a follow-up attack.
The game features over 450 unique cards split across major factions like the Grand Alliance (High Elves, Dwarfs, Empire) and the Hordes of Darkness (Orcs, Goblins, Chaos).
⭐ Short Review:
A Frigid TranslationThe GoodAccurate Ruleset: For existing fans of the Sabertooth WarCry game, the mechanics are recreated flawlessly. Card Artwork: The cards use the exact, beautiful high-fantasy artwork from the physical game. The BadTerrible Presentation: The game lacks 3D battle animations, character models, or voice acting—battles are literally just 2D cards bumping into each other over static backgrounds. Readability Issues: The text on the cards is incredibly blurry and difficult to read on the PSP screen, even when using the zoom function. Clunky Interface: Deck sorting, a critical part of any CCG, is tedious, and load times disrupt the flow of modifying your army.
