Ape Escape (1999) is an absolute masterpiece and one of the most culturally significant titles in PlayStation 1 history. Developed by Sony’s Japan Studio, it holds the legendary title of being the very first video game to absolutely require the DualShock Analog Controller to play.
Instead of treating the analog sticks as an afterthought, Ape Escape built its entire innovative, wacky gameplay loop around them, completely redefining how 3D platformers could look and feel.
Story & Premise: Monkeys Through Time
A hyper-intelligent, albino zoo monkey named Spector accidentally puts on an experimental, intelligence-boosting helmet called the Peak Point Helmet (Pipo Helmet). Rebellious and power-hungry, Spector frees the rest of the zoo monkeys, steals a high-tech Time Machine from a local laboratory, and sends his new simian army back into the past to rewrite human history so that monkeys rule the world.
The Gadget Boy: You play as Spike, a brave young boy who is accidentally pulled into the time vortex along with his friend Jake. Equipped with an array of crazy inventions supplied by the Professor, Spike must travel through various historical eras—from the prehistoric Age of Dinosaurs to Medieval castles and futuristic space stations—to track down, outsmart, and capture every single escaped monkey.

Early 3D Camera Woes: Because the right stick is dedicated entirely to your gadgets, you have to constantly tap the L1 button to snap the camera behind Spike’s back, which can occasionally feel a bit disorienting during fast-paced chases.
