Army Men 3D (1999) is a classic piece of plastic warfare nostalgia on the PlayStation 1. Developed and published by The 3000 Duo (a division of the legendary 3DO Company), this game successfully brought the classic childhood playground fantasy of toy soldiers coming to life into the world of third-person 3D action shooters.

It kicked off a massive, highly successful spin-off franchise for 3DO, charming a generation of gamers with its clever blend of military combat and toy-store aesthetics.

Story & Premise: Green vs. Tan

The game drops you right into the middle of a brutal, unending global conflict tearing through the “Plastic World.” The war pits the noble, disciplined Green Army against the ruthless, tyrannical Tan Army.

The Plastic Hero: You play as Sarge (Sergeant Hawk), a gruff, battle-hardened green commando who is the absolute spearhead of the Green Army’s special forces. The Tan Army, led by the treacherous General Plastro, has discovered ancient, mystical portals leading into an alternate reality known as the “Real World.” From this giant world, they are smuggling back terrifyingly destructive alien artifacts—such as giant magnifying glasses, firecrackers, and soda cans—to melt the Green Army once and for all.

Sarge must lead his squad across dangerous plastic frontline battlefields and cross over into giant human environments to destroy the portals, disrupt the Tan supply lines, and put an end to Plastro’s schemes.

Key Gameplay Features

  • Dynamic Toy Arsenal: Sarge can collect a massive variety of weapons scattered across the battlefield. The weapons interact realistically with the plastic anatomy of the troops:
    • The Flamethrower: The most iconic weapon in the game, which instantly liquefies enemy Tan soldiers into colorful, bubbling puddles of melted plastic.
    • The Mine Detector: Allows Sarge to slowly sweep the ground to uncover hidden, explosive Tan landmines blocking critical choke points.
    • Bazookas & Grenades: Perfect for blowing apart sandbag fortifications and enemy guard towers.
  • Vehicular Combat: Missions frequently give you access to driveable vehicles, allowing Sarge to hop into the driver’s seat of a fast-moving Willys Jeep or a heavy M4 Sherman Tank to run over Tan squads and blast enemy bunkers.
  • Crawl & Cover Mechanics: Ahead of its time for late-90s shooters, the game rewards tactical movement. Sarge can drop prone to crawl stealthily through tall grass, dive behind sandbags to avoid sniper fire, and roll out of the way of incoming artillery shells.
  • Split-Screen Versus Mode: Features a highly addictive, local 2-player multiplayer split-screen arena mode where friends can customize their starting loadouts and fight to the death as either Green or Tan soldiers across custom-tailored maps.

Short Review: A Highly Creative, Gritty Plastic War

The Good

  • Incredibly Fun Premise: The concept of translating plastic toy soldier rules into a real-time 3D tactical war game is brilliant and executed with immense charm.
  • Satisfying Visual Effects: Watching enemy soldiers get blown into shattered plastic limbs by grenades or watching them slowly melt into blobs from a flamethrower is deeply satisfying and full of dark humor.
  • Great Mission Variety: The game keeps you on your toes by constantly shifting objectives—you’ll rescue captured prisoners of war, execute stealthy night recons, defend forward bases, and hijack enemy convoys.

The Bad

Aggressive Fog Distance: To keep the frame rate steady on the PS1 hardware, the game heavily utilizes a thick fog-of-war visual barrier that drastically limits your view distance, meaning Tan soldiers can occasionally shoot at you from beyond your line of sight.

Clunky Tank Controls: Moving Sarge around using the pre-dual analog layout can feel a bit stiff and heavy. Turning your character around to face a fast-moving enemy sniper often requires a frustratingly wide turning radius.
