Army Men: Air Attack (1999) took the plastic warfare franchise to the skies, shifting focus from boots-on-the-ground shooting to intense, arcade-style helicopter combat. Developed and published by The 3DO Company, it borrows heavily from the gameplay formula popularized by Electronic Arts’ classic Strike series (Desert Strike, Soviet Strike), re-imagining it through a whimsical, toy-centric lens.
It remains one of the most fondly remembered entries in the entire Army Men library because of its smooth flight mechanics and creative stage designs.
Story & Premise: Wings of Green
The conflict between the noble Green Army and the tyrannical Tan Army has officially escalated into a full-scale aerial war. General Plastro, commander of the Tan forces, has secured a powerful alliance with a rogue faction of the Blue Army (the air-force specialists) and the sneaky Grey Army to establish total air superiority over the Plastic World.
The Sky Captain: You play as Captain William Blade, a fearless ace pilot commanding the newly formed Green Air Cavalry. Flying high-tech plastic helicopters, you are sent behind enemy lines to disrupt the Tan infrastructure, rescue captured Green ground units, and journey through giant, dangerous portals into the “Real World” to stop Plastro from harvesting destructive human household items for his war machine.

- The Fleet of Choppers: Players can unlock and pilot four distinct, historically inspired plastic helicopters, each balanced with unique armor, speed, and weapons capacity profiles:
- Huey (UH-1): The dependable, all-rounder starter chopper.
- Chinook (CH-47): A slow, heavy lifting fortress capable of holding massive amounts of secondary ordnance.
- Super Cobra (AH-1W): A sleek, hyper-fast attack helicopter built for high-speed dogfights.
- Apache (AH-64): The ultimate endgame vehicle, boasting maxed-out firepower and armor.
- Eccentric Copilots: Before deploying, you select a copilot to manage your secondary turrets. Each copilot alters your primary weapon attributes. For example, Hardcore boosts your raw missile damage, while Woodstock turns your machine gun into a rapid-fire laser.
- The Interactive Winch Mechanic: Your most versatile tool. By dropping a tow cable, your chopper can physical lift objects off the ground. You can pick up health boxes and weapon crates, or grab heavy environmental props—like giant bowling balls, apples, and D-cell batteries—and drop them directly onto Tan antiaircraft guns to smash them.
- Dual-Analog Control Optimization: Unlike earlier Army Men games, Air Attack completely embraced the PS1 DualShock controller. The left analog stick handles your direct 3D flight movement, while the right stick controls your strafe orientation, allowing you to circle-strafe around giant bosses with ease.
Short Review: A Fresh, Highly Addictive Spin-Off
The Good
- Brilliant Scale & Level Design: Fighting Tan infantry around giant hot dogs on a burning backyard barbecue grill or dogfighting enemy planes inside a messy toy room captures the childlike “toys come to life” fantasy perfectly.
- Superb Local Co-Op: The entire 16-mission campaign can be played side-by-side with a friend in local split-screen co-op, making tactical extraction missions immensely fun to coordinate.
- Snappy, Responsive Controls: The flight engine strikes a perfect balance between weight and arcade responsiveness, making dodging incoming homing missiles feel incredibly satisfying.
The Bad
- Repetitive Audio Design: While the orchestral military score is epic, the repetitive voice lines shouted by ground troops and your copilot can get incredibly grating over long play sessions.
- Chaotic Camera Angles: During tight skirmishes inside narrow environments (like a human living room), the overhead tracking camera can occasionally get blocked by giant furniture, temporarily blinding your line of sight.
