Lumines II (2006) is the super-sized sequel to the PSP’s most iconic puzzle game. Developed by Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s team at Q Entertainment, it takes the “music-and-light” synchronicity of the first game and injects it with music videos, licensed American pop/rock tracks, and a suite of new game modes.

Game Premise: The Party in Your Pocket

There is no “story” in the traditional sense; instead, Lumines II is framed as a high-energy audiovisual party. You are the DJ and the player, tasked with clearing blocks to keep the music flowing. The game is famous for its Skins—themed levels where the background visuals, block designs, and sound effects change to match the specific song playing.

The Core Gameplay:

  • You drop $2 \times 2$ blocks consisting of two different colors.

  • The goal is to form $2 \times 2$ (or larger) squares of a single color.

  • A vertical Timeline sweeps across the screen in time with the music’s BPM (Beats Per Minute), erasing any completed squares it touches.

  • If your blocks stack to the top of the screen, the party is over.

Key New Features

  • Music Videos: For the first time, actual music videos play in the background of certain licensed skins, making the game feel like a playable MTV block.

  • Mission Mode: Instead of just playing for score, you must complete specific tasks, such as clearing a certain number of blocks in a limited time or erasing a specific pattern.

  • Sequencer: A creative tool that allows you to create your own loops and musical patterns using the game’s sound library.

  • Skin Edit Mode: Allows you to create a custom “playlist” of your favorite unlocked skins to play in a continuous loop.

  • Expanded Challenge Mode: Divided into different classes (B, A, S, and Enduro) to better suit everyone from casual players to puzzle grandmasters.

Iconic Soundtrack Highlights

The sequel moved away from the purely electronic/ambient vibe of the first game to include mainstream hits:

  • “Pump It” – Black Eyed Peas

  • “Hollaback Girl” – Gwen Stefani

  • “Star Guitar” – The Chemical Brothers

  • “Black Tambourine” – Beck

  • “Heavenly Star” – Genki Rockets (A cult classic original for the game)

Short Review: Bigger, Louder, Better?

The Good

  • Visual Polish: The menus and transitions are incredibly sleek; it remains one of the most stylish-looking games on the system.

  • Content Volume: There are roughly three times more skins and modes here than in the original Lumines.

  • Mission Mode: This adds a much-needed layer of tactical thinking for players who found the “Endless” mode too repetitive.

The Bad

  • Distracting Backgrounds: The music videos are cool, but they can be so busy that it becomes difficult to see the blocks during intense moments.

  • The “Pop” Shift: Fans of the original’s underground electronic soundtrack often felt the inclusion of Gwen Stefani and The Black Eyed Peas felt a bit too “corporate.”
