My Merry May with be (2010) is a massive visual novel compilation for the PSP. Developed by the legendary studio KID and published by CyberFront, this release is the definitive way to experience one of the most beloved “Sci-Fi Romance” series of the early 2000s.

It bundles two full games and additional story content into a single package, making it a “must-play” for fans of the “Android with a Soul” trope.

The Story: The “Replis” Chronicles

The series centers on Replis, artificial humans developed for companionship.

Part 1: My Merry May

You play as Kyosuke, a high school student who receives a Replis named Reu from his family abroad.

  • The Glitch: During her activation, a lightning strike causes a system error.

  • The Result: Instead of an ideal adult companion, Reu has the body of a teenager but the mind and innocence of a toddler. Kyosuke must raise her while hiding her existence (since Replis are illegal in Japan).

Part 2: My Merry Maybe

Set some time after the first game, you play as Hiroto, a university student doing an internship in a small port town.

  • The Encounter: He finds another Replis named Leu (who looks identical to Reu).

  • The Conflict: This story leans heavier into the philosophical and “Utsuge” (depressing/crying game) elements, dealing with the ethics of artificial life and the mysterious organization hunting them.

Key Features: The “With Be” Content

The PSP version isn’t just a simple port; it contains the “With Be” additions originally found in the 2005 PS2 release:

  • Three New Scenarios: 1. Prologue: An intro to Kyosuke’s life before Reu arrived. 2. Bridge Story: Explains what happened to Reu in the gap between the two main games. 3. Epilogue: A final conclusion to the My Merry Maybe storyline.

  • Route Variety: There are 5+ heroines with full branching paths, including childhood friends, dorm managers, and mysterious quiet girls.

  • Binaural Audio: The PSP port features high-quality sound for the voice acting, making the “ear-whispering” scenes common in bishoujo games more immersive.

Secrets & Route Tips

Because this is a visual novel, “secrets” are mostly tied to unlocking the True Ending.

  • The Misao Route: Widely considered the “high point” of the entire franchise. It is also the most heartbreaking. It is highly recommended to play this route last, as it recontextualizes the entire world.

  • The Reu/Leu Connection: Pay attention to the “Bug” mentioned in the first game. The technical reason for Reu’s behavior is the key to understanding the villain’s motivations in the second game.

  • CG Gallery: Clearing both games 100% unlocks a massive art gallery featuring work by the series’ lead artist, Takayuki Matsuoka.

Short Review: A Emotional Masterpiece

The Good

  • Emotional Weight: It transitions perfectly from a “cute comedy” about a robot-baby to a deep, philosophical drama about what it means to be human.

  • Art Style: The character designs have that classic, soft early-2000s aesthetic that feels very nostalgic.

  • Value: Getting two full 20+ hour visual novels on one UMD is a fantastic deal.

The Bad

  • Language Barrier: This game was never localized in English. Unless you can read Japanese or have a translation guide handy, it is unplayable for Western audiences.

  • Dated Tropes: Some of the “clumsy girl” tropes and early 2000s anime cliches might feel a bit worn out by modern standards.
