Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Essentials (2006) is an exclusive handheld installment in Ubisoft’s premier stealth-action franchise. Developed by Ubisoft Montreal, the game was designed specifically for the PlayStation Portable, offering a retrospective journey through Sam Fisher’s past while bridging the narrative gap between Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Splinter Cell: Double Agent.

🕶️ Story & Setting: Sam Fisher’s Flashbacks

The game opens in 2009. Sam Fisher sneaks into the cemetery where his daughter Sarah is buried, only to be arrested by the NSA under suspicion of treason.

While undergoing interrogation at NSA Headquarters, Sam reflects on pivotal, never-before-seen missions from his past as well as iconic moments from earlier games. The campaign acts as a “greatest hits” tour through Fisher’s career:

  • 1992 (Colombia): Sam’s early Navy SEAL days rescuing his commanding officer, Douglas Shetland.
  • 1999 (Yugoslavia): A covert pre-Third Echelon infiltration mission.
  • 2004–2007: Reimagined portable adaptations of classic missions from Splinter Cell, Pandora Tomorrow, and Chaos Theory.
  • 2009 (NSA HQ): A present-day escape mission setting up the events of Double Agent.

⚙️ Core Stealth Gameplay & Gadgets

  • Classic Light & Sound Dynamics: The core gameplay mirrors the main console titles. Staying hidden in deep shadows, monitoring your light/sound meters, and shooting out light fixtures are crucial to avoiding detection.
  • Signature Moves & Gadgets: Sam retains his classic moveset, including the pipe climb, wall splits, ledge hangs, human shields, and silent knife/choke takedowns. His arsenal includes night-vision/thermal goggles, sticky shockers, ring airfoil rounds, and lockpicks.
  • Spy vs. Spy Multiplayer: Features a 2-player local Ad-Hoc multiplayer mode adapting the famous Spies vs. Mercenaries formula, where one player attempts to hack terminals while the other hunts them down.
  • ⭐ Short Review: High Franchise Fidelity, Tough Controls
  • The Good
  • Rich Lore & Flashback Campaign: For die-hard Splinter Cell fans, exploring Sam Fisher’s pre-Third Echelon origin story and re-visiting classic levels on a handheld is a major treat.
  • Great Visuals & Atmosphere: Excellent dark lighting effects, shadow rendering, and Michael Ironside’s iconic voice work preserve the series’ authentic tone.
  • The Bad
  • Frustrating Camera Controls: Lacking a second analog stick on the PSP, free-looking and camera adjustment require holding down the Circle button while using the analog nub, which can feel clumsy during high-pressure stealth moments.
  • Overly Dark Environments: Screen glare on real PSP hardware can make extremely dark levels hard to navigate without constantly relying on Night Vision goggles.
