2Xtreme (1996) is the direct sequel to the PlayStation launch title 1Xtreme (originally ESPN Extreme Games). It took the formula of high-speed combat racing and expanded it significantly, adding new sports like snowboarding and more refined character animations while keeping the “aggressive” racing style the series was known for.
Game Premise
In 2Xtreme, you are an elite athlete competing in the world’s most dangerous racing circuit. The game features 12 different tracks across four diverse environments: Japan, Africa, Las Vegas, and the Alps. The goal remains simple: navigate through gates for points, perform stunts for speed boosts, and beat your opponents to the finish line—either by out-skating them or by knocking them out of the race.
Back Cover Description
“MAXIMUM SPEED. TOTAL AGGRESSION.”
“The sequel to the best-selling extreme sports game of all time! 2Xtreme takes you to the edge with more speed, more tricks, and more ways to crush the competition. Choose your gear: Mountain Bike, Skateboard, Inline Skates, or the all-new Snowboard.
Battle through 12 grueling international courses, from the neon streets of Las Vegas to the frozen peaks of the Alps. Master the new stunt system to earn massive speed bursts, and use your fists and feet to show the other racers who owns the road. With improved 3D graphics and a two-player split-screen mode, this is the ultimate adrenaline rush.
Own the competition. Rule the streets.“
Key Gameplay Features
-
Four Sports: Includes Mountain Biking, Skateboarding, Inline Skating, and the newly added Snowboarding, which features unique physics for the snowy Alps tracks.
-
Stunt System: Performing grabs and flips while in the air fills a “Power Bar,” which grants a temporary speed boost when landed successfully.
-
Combat Mechanics: You can punch (Circle) and kick (X) your rivals. Knocking them down gives you a clear path and prevents them from stealing your gate points.
-
Exhibition & Season Modes: Play a single race or compete in a full season to earn points and move up the global rankings.
-
Customizable Characters: Choose from a roster of diverse athletes, each with different ratings for speed, handling, and strength.
Short Review: Bigger, Better, Faster
-
The Good: The addition of snowboarding and stunts makes the gameplay feel much deeper than the original. The tracks are better designed, with more shortcuts and verticality. It remains one of the best examples of 90s “attitude” in gaming.
-
The Bad: The graphics, while improved over the first game, still feature significant polygon jitter and “fogging” to hide the draw distance. The AI can also be extremely aggressive, making the later season races quite difficult.
-
The Verdict: If you enjoyed the first game or titles like Road Rash, 2Xtreme is a mandatory part of your PS1 collection. It’s a fast, chaotic, and satisfying racer.
