3Xtreme (1999) marked the third and final installment of Sony’s “Xtreme” racing series on the PlayStation 1. While the first two games used 2D sprites in a 3D world, 3Xtreme moved to full 3D models for the racers, attempting to bring the franchise into the modern era with more realistic physics and expanded trick systems.
Game Premise
The core remains the same: high-speed, aggressive racing across diverse tracks. You can choose to compete on a Mountain Bike, Skateboard, or Inline Skates. However, the focus shifted slightly from pure combat (punching and kicking) toward a more robust freestyle trick system, where landing complex moves is essential for maintaining top speed.
Back Cover Description

-
Career Mode: Earn points to upgrade your equipment, including faster wheels, lighter frames, and better protective gear.
-
Unlockable Secrets: Features a variety of hidden characters, including a RC Car and even an Alien, each with their own unique handling styles.
Short Review: The End of an Era
-
The Good: The sheer volume of content is impressive. With 27 tracks and a deep upgrade system, there is a lot to keep you busy. The move to full 3D makes the “wipeout” animations much more varied and entertaining to watch.
-
The Bad: Many fans felt the transition to full 3D models made the controls feel “heavier” and less responsive than the snappy 2D-sprite gameplay of 2Xtreme. The frame rate also takes a hit during 4-player races.
-
The Verdict: While it divided fans upon release, 3Xtreme is a solid technical achievement for the PS1. It is a more “serious” sports game than its predecessors, focusing on skill and mastery of the trick system.
