Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony (2006) is widely considered one of the top “Diablo-clones” on the PSP. While it carries the Dungeon Siege name, developer SuperVillain Studios built this from the ground up specifically for the handheld, ditching the “party-management” style of the PC games for a focused, fast-paced Action RPG.

The Premise: Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy

The game takes place after the events of Dungeon Siege II. The world of Aranna is in ruins after a cataclysmic event, and a new threat—the Malith—has emerged from the shadows.

  • The Hero: You choose one of three distinct characters, each with a deep branching skill tree.

  • The Mission: You travel across broken continents to stop the “Throne of Agony” from being used to rewrite reality.

  • The Vibe: It’s darker and more linear than the PC entries, focusing on tight combat and constant loot drops.

Key Features: Followers and Evolutions

The PSP version introduced a few mechanics that made it stand out in the crowded ARPG market:

  • The Hero Characters:

    1. Allivar: The warlord/tank (Melee focus).

    2. Mogrim: The battle mage (Elemental spells).

    3. Serene: The shadow stalker (Agility/Stealth).

  • Hero Classes & Sub-Classes: At level 30, you choose a “Hero Class,” and at level 60, you choose a “Legendary Class.” This allows for highly specialized builds (e.g., turning your Mage into a Necromancer or a Battle Priest).

  • Followers & Pets: You don’t hunt alone. You can choose a permanent companion (like a hooded archer or a stone golem) who levels up alongside you. You can also equip “Pets” that provide passive stat boosts.

  • No Loading Screens (Mostly): The game uses a seamless streaming technology for its world. Once you leave a town, you can explore massive wilderness areas and dungeons without a single loading bar.

Gameplay Loop

  • Combat: Pure hack-and-slash. It uses a “soft lock” system that makes targeting enemies with the analog nub feel smooth.

  • Loot: Tons of it. The game features a color-coded rarity system (Common, Magical, Rare, Unique, Set) that keeps the “just one more chest” dopamine loop going.

  • Ad-Hoc Multiplayer: You can play the entire campaign in 2-player co-op. Each player brings their own follower, effectively creating a 4-man squad of mayhem.

Short Review: Portable Powerhouse

The Good

  • Visuals: For 2006, the spell effects and character models were stunning. The water effects, in particular, were a high point for PSP graphics.

  • Depth: The triple-tier class system provides a lot of “theory-crafting” value. You really feel the power spike every time you evolve your class.

  • Control Scheme: It’s one of the most comfortable ARPGs to play on the PSP; the button mapping for skills is intuitive and responsive.

The Bad

  • Generic Story: While the lore is tied to the main series, the plot itself is fairly standard “save the world” fare with forgettable NPCs.

  • Inventory Management: Like many PSP RPGs, the menus can feel a bit cramped. Spending 10 minutes comparing stats on 50 different pairs of boots can get tedious.

  • Difficulty Spikes: Some bosses toward the end of the game have massive health pools that turn the fight into a war of attrition rather than skill.
