Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Heroes 3 (released in Japan as Narutimate Accel 3) was the final entry in the Heroes trilogy for the PSP. Released in 2010, it marked the series’ transition into the Shippuden era and attempted to shake up the formula with significantly more players on screen.

The Massive Roster

The game features over 50 playable characters, covering the story from Naruto’s return to the village up to the battle between Sasuke and Itachi. Highlights include:

  • The New Generation: Naruto (4-Tailed form), Kakashi (Young/ANBU), and the debut of the Akatsuki members like Hidan, Kakuzu, and Sasori.

  • The “Hebi” Team: Sasuke (Hebe), Suigetsu, Karin, and Jugo.

  • Hidden Gems: Fan-favorites like Obito Uchiha and Minato Namikaze (The Fourth Hokage) are playable, which was a huge draw for fans at the time.

📝 Game Description

Unlike previous entries that were strictly 1-on-1, Heroes 3 leans into a more chaotic “party fighter” style similar to Super Smash Bros. but within the Ultimate Ninja mechanics.

Gameplay Pillars:

  • Master Road (Story Mode): A massive campaign with over 80 missions. It mixes traditional fighting with side-scrolling platforming sections where you fight waves of low-level ninja “minions.”

  • Tactical Multi-Plane Combat: Battles take place on 2D planes, but you can jump between the foreground and background to dodge projectiles or corner an opponent.

  • Team Jutsu: When playing in teams, you can trigger massive combined Ultimate Jutsu that feature unique cinematics for specific pairings (like Naruto and Jiraiya).

  • Awakening System: Characters can transform (e.g., Curse Mark or Tailed Beast modes) at almost any time once their chakra is high enough, completely changing their moveset and speed.

⭐ Short Review: Quantity Over Quality?

The Good

  • Unbeatable Roster: For a PSP game, the character selection is staggering. Having the entire Akatsuki and the legendary Sannin in your pocket was the ultimate fan service in 2010.

  • Chaotic Multiplayer: The 4-player battles are a blast when played via Ad-hoc with friends. It’s messy, fast-paced, and filled with “did you see that?” moments.

  • High Production Value: The game features full voice acting from the anime cast and vibrant cel-shaded graphics that still hold up well on the PSP’s small screen.
