Dynasty Warriors (2004/2005) was a high-profile launch title for the PSP. To make the massive scale of the “Three Kingdoms” work on a handheld, developer Omega Force completely reimagined the series’ structure, moving away from seamless open battlefields in favor of a unique, bite-sized tactical system.

Game Premise

The game covers the legendary conflict of Ancient China as seen in the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. While it features the classic “one vs. thousands” combat, it is structured as a series of short, interconnected skirmishes. You choose a hero from the Shu, Wei, or Wu forces and fight to unify China, one territory at a time.

📄 Back Cover Description

AN EPIC LEGEND IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND.

“Experience the thrill of legendary combat on a whole new scale. Dynasty Warriors for the PSP brings the massive battles of the Three Kingdoms to the mobile world. Command 42 of history’s greatest warriors and unleash devastating Musou attacks against legions of enemy soldiers.

Strategize your victory with the all-new Battlefield Area System, designed for fast-paced, high-stakes action on the go. Recruit and collect over 200 ‘Second-in-Command’ officers to bolster your strength and provide life-saving support in the heat of battle. Trade your collected officers with friends via the Memory Stick Duo to build the ultimate army.

The battle for the Empire has begun. One warrior. One thousand enemies. Your destiny awaits.

Key Gameplay Mechanics: The Handheld Twist

  • Battlefield Area System: Instead of one large map, each stage is a grid of smaller “zones.” You move your character like a board game piece. If you enter a zone held by the enemy, you fight a 2–5 minute skirmish to capture it.

  • Morale & Tactics: Capturing a zone affects the morale of adjacent zones. You must decide whether to rush the enemy commander or strategically take over supply bases to weaken their main camp.

  • Second-in-Command (Officers): You don’t have standard bodyguards. Instead, you collect “Officer Cards.” You can equip up to four, and they provide passive stat boosts or “Support Skills” (like healing or increasing your Musou bar).

  • Data Sharing: You can exchange your collected sub-officers with other players using the PSP’s local wireless or Memory Stick transfer.

Playable Cast

The game includes 42 playable characters from Dynasty Warriors 4, including:

  • Shu: Zhao Yun, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei.

  • Wei: Cao Cao, Xiahou Dun, Dian Wei.

  • Wu: Sun Jian, Zhou Yu, Sun Shangxiang.

  • Others: Lu Bu, Diao Chan.

Short Review: The “Pocket” Revolution

The Good

  • Pick-Up-and-Play: The grid system is perfect for commuting; you can save your progress after every tiny skirmish.

  • Technical Feat: For a launch title, seeing dozens of enemies on screen with fluid animations was a great showcase of the PSP’s power.

  • Replayability: Unlocking all 200+ sub-officers provides a massive amount of “collect-a-thon” content.

The Bad

  • Small Combat Arenas: The “epic” feeling of a 30-minute siege is lost in favor of small, arena-like boxes.

  • Fog of War: To keep the frame rate stable, the “draw distance” is short—enemies often pop into existence right in front of you.

  • No Voice Acting: To save space on the UMD, most of the dialogue is text-only, losing some of the series’ campy charm.
