After Burner: Black Falcon (2007) is the sixth entry in the legendary SEGA flight series. Unlike the arcade ports that came before it, Black Falcon was developed by Planet Moon Studios specifically for the PSP, adding a deep story and plane customization to the classic “lock-on and fire” arcade loop.
Game Story & Premise
For the first time in the series, Black Falcon features a cinematic narrative with three different pilots to choose from.
Back Cover Description:
“Thirteen prototype ‘Assassin’ fighter jets have been stolen by a mysterious terrorist cell known as Black Falcon. As a top-tier pilot in the Joint Task Force Scramble Team, you are the world’s only hope to recover these high-tech weapons before they are used to trigger a global catastrophe.
Choose your pilot, customize your aircraft, and engage in high-octane air-to-air and air-to-ground combat. From the scorching deserts to the frozen arctic, the sky is a battlefield. Take back the prototypes. Eliminate the Black Falcon. No flight plan. No mercy.”

The Good
-
Sense of Speed: The game maintains the series’ hallmark “breakneck” speed, making every dogfight feel intense.
-
Customization Depth: Experimenting with different payloads and speed upgrades adds a “hook” that original arcade versions lacked.
-
Portable Friendly: Missions are short (5–10 minutes), making it one of the best “commuter” games on the PSP.
The Bad
-
Short Campaign: Even with three pilots, you can see almost everything the game has to offer in about 5 or 6 hours.
-
Draw Distance: Due to the hardware, some environmental objects “pop in” quite abruptly, which can be distracting at high speeds.
