Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days (2009) is the definitive version of the tactical RPG masterpiece, Cursed Memories. Released on the PSP, it took the massive PS2 original and stuffed it with enough new content, characters, and system refinements to make the console version feel like a demo.

Game Story & Premise

In the world of Veldime, a powerful Overlord named Zenon has placed a curse on the human population, slowly turning them into monsters and stripping away their memories.

The Plot: Adell, the only human left unaffected by the curse, vows to defeat Zenon to save his family. However, a botched summoning ritual intended to bring Zenon to him instead pulls in Zenon’s daughter, Rozalin. Bound by a contract, the hot-headed demon hunter and the sheltered Overlord’s princess must travel together across Veldime to find her father and break the curse.

Back Cover Description

THE OVERLORD OF STRATEGY RPGS RETURNS—PORTABLE AND PUNCHIER THAN EVER!

“Darkness has fallen over Veldime, and the only hope for humanity lies in the fists of a stubborn young man named Adell. But when a summoning ritual goes hilariously wrong, Adell finds himself stuck with the ultimate baggage: Rozalin, the haughty daughter of the very Overlord he’s sworn to kill!

Experience the quintessential Disgaea 2 experience with the all-new Axel Mode, featuring the ‘Dark Hero’ himself in a side-splitting new story. Master the refined combat system with Magichange and Receive abilities, and dive into an Item World that never ends. With a level cap of 9,999 and damage numbers that defy logic, the battle for Veldime is just getting started.

Are you man enough to face the Overlord?

PSP Exclusive Features: The “Remix”

This isn’t just a port; it’s a total overhaul. Here is what was added for the PSP:

  • Axel Mode: A brand-new secondary campaign starring the washed-up “Dark Hero” Axel. It takes place before the main story and offers a unique perspective on the world.

  • New Characters: Added several fan-favorites from other NIS games, including Pleinair, Ash (Phantom Brave), and Marona.

  • Magichange: Borrowed from Disgaea 3, this allows monster units to transform into powerful weapons for human units to wield.

  • Tera Magic: A new tier of spells above “Peta,” featuring screen-filling animations and massive damage.

  • Refined Dark Assembly: Added the ability to use “Bribes” more effectively and new bills to pass.

Key Gameplay Mechanics

  • The Item World: Every single item in the game contains a randomly generated dungeon inside it. Clearing floors levels up the item.

  • Geopanels: Colored tiles on the battlefield that grant buffs (like +50% Attack) or debuffs (like Warp). Destroying “Geo Symbols” can trigger massive chain reactions.

  • Level Cap: Like all Disgaea games, the cap is 9,999, and you can “Reincarnate” characters back to Level 1 while keeping a percentage of their stats to create god-tier warriors.

  • Tower Attacks: Stack your characters on top of each other to perform “Tower” moves, allowing you to reach high ledges or execute massive combined attacks.

Short Review: SRPG Perfection

The Good

  • Endless Content: You can easily put 200+ hours into this game and still find new things to do in the Item World.

  • Portable Friendly: The turn-based nature and the “sleep mode” of the PSP make this the perfect game for short bursts or long commutes.

  • Humor: The writing is sharp, fourth-wall-breaking, and genuinely funny.

The Bad

  • The Grind: If you want to beat the “Post-Game” bosses (like Pringer X), be prepared for dozens of hours of repetitive leveling.

  • Visuals: While the sprites are charming, they are low-resolution and can look a bit “jagged” on the PSP screen compared to modern HD versions.
