The original Patapon (2007) is a rhythm-action masterpiece that redefined handheld strategy. It turns you into a god whose voice is a set of sacred drums, leading a tribe of brave, eyeball-like warriors across a dangerous, stylized world.
Game Story / Plot / Premise
Centuries ago, the Patapon Tribe was a legendary nation of warriors who ruled the lands. They were guided by the “Almighty,” a deity who led them with the rhythm of sacred drums. However, after the drums were lost, the tribe fell into decline and was driven to the edge of the world by the tyrannical Zigoton Empire.
The story begins when you, the Almighty, return to the tribe. You find them a broken, scattered people living in the desolate Patapolis. Upon recovering the sacred drums, you begin a Great March to reclaim their ancestral lands. Their ultimate goal is to reach “Earthend,” a legendary place where they believe they will find “IT”—an enigmatic object or being that promises eternal happiness and fulfillment. Along the way, you must battle prehistoric monsters, survive harsh climates, and overcome the dark magic of the Zigoton Queen, Kharma.
Back Cover Description
BEAT THE DRUMS. LEAD THE TRIBE. REACH EARTHEND.
“The rhythm of war is in your hands! For years, the Patapon tribe has lived in the shadows, hunted and forgotten. But the drums of destiny are beating once again. As the Great Deity, you must command your loyal followers using the sacred rhythms of Pata, Pon, Don, and Chaka.
March your army through treacherous swamps and scorching deserts. Customize your forces into a lethal legion of spearmen, archers, and cavalry. Engage in rhythmic combat against colossal monsters and the relentless Zigoton army. When the beat is perfect, the tribe enters a FEVER state, unleashing their true, devastating power!
Will you lead the Patapons to the fabled Earthend, or will the song of the tribe fade into silence? Your rhythm determines their fate.“

Yaripon (Spears): Your basic, reliable skirmishers.
-
Tatepon (Shields): Essential front-liners that soak up damage.
-
Yumipon (Bows): Back-line support that rains arrows on the enemy.
-
Kibapon (Cavalry): High-speed units that can knock back foes.
-
Dekapon (Giants): Slow but incredibly powerful melee bruisers.
-
Megapon (Music): Support units that use “sound waves” to attack and buff.
Short Review: Minimalist Genius
The Good
-
Iconic Visuals: The silhouette art style by Rolito is striking and has aged perfectly; it looks just as good today as it did in 2007.
-
Addictive Soundtrack: The music and the Patapons’ chanting are incredibly catchy. You’ll find yourself humming “Pata-Pata-Pata-Pon” long after you turn off the console.
-
Deep Customization: Beyond the rhythm, there is a deep RPG layer involving material gathering and unit evolution.
The Bad
-
The “Fever” Difficulty: Maintaining Fever requires a perfect internal clock. One small distraction can break your combo and leave your army vulnerable.
-
No Pause Button: In the original PSP version, you cannot pause during a mission. If the phone rings or you need a break, you have to finish the stage or quit.
