Dissidia: Final Fantasy (2008/2009) was the ultimate 20th-anniversary celebration for the franchise. It transformed the traditionally turn-based series into a high-speed, “vertical” arena fighter, pitting the greatest heroes and villains of the first ten Final Fantasy games against one another in a war between two gods.

Story: Cosmos vs. Chaos

The cycle of war is eternal. Cosmos, the goddess of harmony, and Chaos, the god of discord, have summoned warriors from across space and time to act as their pawns.

The Plot: As the balance shifts in favor of Chaos, the ten heroes of light must recover their individual “Crystals” to save their worlds from fading into the void. The story is surprisingly deep, featuring unique interactions between characters who would never otherwise meet—like Cloud Strife (FFVII) debating the meaning of duty with the Warrior of Light (FFI).

Key Gameplay Mechanics

  • Bravery (BRV) vs. HP: This is the core of Dissidia.

    • Bravery Attacks: Do not deal damage to your opponent’s health. Instead, they “steal” points from the enemy’s Bravery pool and add them to your own.

    • HP Attacks: These consume your current Bravery points to deal direct damage to the enemy’s health bar. If you hit $0$ HP, the fight is over.

  • EX Gauge & EX Bursts: Dealing damage fills your EX meter. Once full, you enter “EX Mode,” gaining buffs and access to a cinematic finisher (the EX Burst) which replicates the iconic Limit Breaks or Overdrives from each character’s original game.

  • The Odyssey (Story Mode): A board-game-style map where you move your character across tiles, fighting “Manikins” (shadow versions of heroes) and bosses while collecting items.

  • RPG Progression: You gain EXP, level up to 100, and equip weapons, armor, and accessories that grant special bonuses (like increased jump height or faster EX gain).

Short Review: A Masterpiece of Fanservice

The Good

  • Incredible Roster: Playing as villains like Sephiroth, Kefka, or Kuja for the first time in high-fidelity 3D was a dream come true for fans.

  • Dynamic Arenas: The levels are fully destructible and interactive. You can grind on rails, smash through walls, and use the environment to your advantage.

  • Remixed Soundtrack: The game features high-energy rock and orchestral arrangements of the most famous themes from Final Fantasy I through X.

The Bad

  • Steep Learning Curve: Managing Bravery, equipment, and the “chase” mechanics can be overwhelming for people looking for a simple button-masher.

  • Grinding: To get the best “Ultimate” weapons, you’ll need to spend dozens of hours farming rare materials and fighting high-level AI.
