The King of Fighters ’95 on the PSP is available through two primary official methods: as a downloadable PSone Classic or as part of a collection. While the game maintains the core 3v3 team fighting mechanics of the series, this specific entry is famous for introducing Kyo Kusanagi’s rival, Iori Yagami, and the series-staple Team Edit system.
Story: The Rivalry Begins
Picking up one year after the first tournament, KOF ’95 officially shifts the spotlight to Kyo Kusanagi.
-
The Plot: The “dead” criminal Rugal Bernstein returns as Omega Rugal to seek revenge.
-
Iori Yagami: This entry marks the debut of Iori, who enters the tournament with the Rival Team (Billy Kane and Eiji Kisaragi) specifically to hunt down Kyo.

Choose your team. Defy your rivals. Become the King.“
Key Gameplay Mechanics
-
Team Edit System: Unlike KOF ’94, which forced you to use pre-set country teams, ’95 allows you to mix and match any three characters.
-
Power Gauge: You can manually charge your gauge by holding ABC. Once full (MAX mode), your damage increases and you can perform your Desperation Move.
-
Defense & Mobility: Features the Sidestep (dodge) and Counter-attack mechanics. Characters can also perform a “Shadow Jump” for higher aerial mobility.
-
The Bosses: The game features two punishing final encounters: a brainwashed Saisyu Kusanagi (Kyo’s father) followed immediately by Omega Rugal.
Short Review: The First “True” KOF
The Good
-
Legacy Characters: The introduction of Iori Yagami changed the franchise forever, giving the series its most iconic protagonist/antagonist dynamic.
-
Customization: The Team Edit feature is the reason KOF became a competitive staple, allowing for endless strategic combinations.
-
Graphics: For its time, the 2D sprites and detailed backgrounds (like the famous Neo Geo Land stage) were top-tier.
The Bad
-
Balance Issues: As an early entry, some characters (like Iori and Ryo) have significantly higher priority and damage output than others.
-
Boss Difficulty: Omega Rugal is a prime example of “SNK Boss Syndrome”—he is incredibly fast, does massive damage, and can be frustratingly cheap for new players.
