Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes (1999) is arguably the most famous, character-driven entry in the entire 3DO plastic warfare franchise. While previous games focused on anonymous green soldiers fighting in bleak trenches, Sarge’s Heroes introduced a distinct, memorable cast of elite commandos and shifted the series into a full, story-heavy 3D third-person action-adventure.

It perfectly captured the nostalgic magic of being a toy in a giant human world, solidifying Sarge as a true 90s gaming icon.

Story & Premise: Beyond the Toy Box

The tyrannical leader of the Tan Army, General Plastro, has successfully invaded the Green Army’s home nation, capturing the entire high command—including the beautiful Vikki Grimm, daughter of the Green King.

Plastro has mastered the use of inter-dimensional portals that lead into the “Real World” (our human universe). From there, he is harvesting weapons of massive plastic destruction: toys and household items that can melt, smash, or vaporize Green troops instantly.

The Rescue Squad: You play as Sarge (Sergeant Hawk), the ultimate, cigar-chomping Green special forces operative. Breaking out of a Tan prison camp, Sarge must assemble his elite squad—the “Heroes”—and travel back and forth between the plastic frontline borders and giant human households to rescue Vikki, destroy Plastro’s super-weapons, and liberate the Green nation.

Key Gameplay Features

  • The Elite “Heroes” Cast: As you progress through the narrative, you manually track down and rescue your captured special-ops squad members. Each squad member features a distinct personality, and rescuing them unlocks them as playable characters in the multiplayer sandbox:
    • Boots: The stealthy, cold-blooded squad scout.
    • Riff: The heavy-weapons bazooka expert.
    • Thick: The dim-witted, heavily armored machine gunner.
    • Scorch: The pyromaniac flamethrower specialist.
  • The Scale Paradox (Level Design): The game’s hallmark is its brilliant environmental contrast. One mission has you crawling through classic, low-polygon plastic military forts, while the very next drops you into a giant human bathroom, forcing you to scale sink basins, climb across giant bars of soap, and dodge leaking water pipes.
  • Sniper First-Person Aiming: Ahead of its time for early console third-person shooters, pressing a shoulder button transitions the camera smoothly over Sarge’s shoulder into a precise first-person aiming reticle. This mechanic is essential for lining up long-distance sniper headshots on Tan guards hiding atop giant table legs.
  • Couch Multiplayer Mayhem: Features an incredibly popular local split-screen multiplayer deathmatch mode, where players can choose their favorite rescued Green hero or Tan villain to hunt each other through downsized household maps.

Short Review: Creative, Nostalgic, But Technically Rough

The Good

  • Unmatched Nostalgic Charm: The feeling of running underneath a giant sofa while dodging incoming plastic gunfire or using a giant spilled carton of milk as tactical cover is incredibly creative and immersive.
  • Great Character Continuity: Giving the franchise an actual cast of characters with voiced cutscenes added a lot of campy, B-movie action charm that made you genuinely want to see Sarge win.
  • Addictive Multiplayer: Gathering friends to play deathmatch across a giant kitchen counter or a sandbox filled with toys remains a core late-90s gaming memory.

The Bad

Unforgiving Camera Control: The tracking camera can occasionally get horribly stuck behind giant domestic objects (like a table leg or a refrigerator door), making it difficult to orient yourself during fast-paced firefights.

The PS1 Performance Tax: While the concept shone beautifully, the aging PlayStation 1 hardware struggled to run the ambitious 3D environments. The frame rate frequently stutters during heavy explosions, and the graphics suffer from blocky textures and heavy polygon warping.
