Tokobot (2005) is a charming puzzle-platformer developed by Tecmo for the PlayStation Portable. Relying on squad-based mechanics reminiscent of Nintendo’s Pikmin, the game tasks you with controlling a swarm of ancient little robots to solve environmental puzzles and fight hostile bosses.

🤖 Premise & Setting: Ruins of Karakuri

You play as Bolt, a young treasure-seeking agent working for the CanAru Lab. While exploring underground ruins filled with technology from an ancient civilization known as the Karakuri, Bolt discovers a group of friendly, small mechanical creatures called Tokobots.

The Tokobots form a loyal bond with Bolt, following him wherever he goes. When a rival organization led by the power-hungry Hoshigami tries to steal ancient superweapons to conquer the world, Bolt and his team of Tokobots must explore the ruins to stop them.

⚙️ Core Mechanics: “Karakuri Combinations”

The game revolves around managing a group of up to 16 Tokobots that follow you automatically. By shifting the formation of your Tokobots, you gain different platforming and combat abilities:

  • Joint Formations:
    • V-Formation (Wing): Links Tokobots to your sides, allowing you to glide over large gaps, execute spin attacks, and flip switches.
    • U-Formation (Circle): Surrounds Bolt in a ring, enabling ground-pound moves, ladder climbing, and defensive shields.
    • I-Formation (Line): Lines Tokobots up behind Bolt like a whip, allowing you to latch onto distant poles, swing across chasms, or pull heavy levers.
  • Overdrive Transformations: As you discover ancient ancient blueprints, your Tokobots can temporarily merge into massive Karakuri superweapons, such as a Mega Hammer, a Samurai Robot, or a Giant Crane to shatter obstacles and defeat giant bosses.

⭐ Short Review: Creative Concept, Rough Camera

The Good

  • Unique & Inventive Gameplay: The formation-based puzzle mechanics feel fresh, making spatial reasoning and timing key to clearing dungeons.
  • Charming Aesthetics: Bright, colorful anime-style visuals and endearing robot animations give the game a lighthearted personality.

The Bad

  • Stiff Camera Control: Without a second analog stick on the PSP, adjusting the camera during complex platforming sections can feel awkward.
  • Repetitive Puzzles: Later levels tend to reuse basic puzzle archetypes with slight variations, leading to occasional pacing drag.
