🗡️ Story & Premise: Arthur's Return to the Underworld
The Lord of the Demon Realm, Hazama, breaches the barrier to the human world and kidnaps Princess Prin Prin.

Once again, the valiant knight Arthur dons his suit of armor and journeys deep into the treacherous Netherworld. To rescue the princess and seal the realm forever, Arthur must fight through waves of undead monstrosities, collect hidden magic rings, and face towering demon lords.

⚙️ Gameplay Mechanics & Modern Features
While preserving the core run-and-gun platforming, Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins introduced major systemic evolutions to the classic gameplay formula:

2.5D Visual Style: Features 3D character models and environments built on a traditional 2D side-scrolling plane, allowing for cinematic camera angles and dynamic background elements.

Expanded Moveset & Magic: Arthur gains mid-air double jumps, ledge hanging, shield blocking, and powerful magic spells (such as invulnerability, firestorms, and time manipulation).

Armor & Weapon Tier System:

Armor: Beyond standard Steel Armor, Arthur can find specialized sets like Magic Armor (instant spell charges), Emperor Armor (increased attack power), and Angel Armor (allows temporary flight). Losing all armor still reduces Arthur to his iconic polka-dot boxer shorts!

Weapons: Includes classic weapons like the Lance, Dagger, and Holy Water, alongside new additions like the Scythe, Whip, and Homing Crossbow.

Non-Linear Exploration & Collectibles: Unlike earlier linear titles, Arthur must collect 33 Rings of Light scattered throughout stages and secret paths to unlock the final boss chamber and achieve the true ending.

⚖️ Game Modes: Ultimate vs. Novice
Recognizing the series' reputation for brutal difficulty, Capcom included multiple play modes:

Ultimate Mode: The classic, unforgiving arcade experience. Dying returns you to checkpoints, lost armor stays gone, and enemy placement is brutally aggressive.

Novice Mode: A far more forgiving mode with infinite lives, mid-stage respawns right where you died, reduced damage intake, and double jumps enabled from the start.

Gokumakai Mura Kai (Revised Version): Released in Japan in 2007 (and included in digital re-releases), this modified mode rebalances the game closer to classic Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, featuring traditional linear stage progression without mandatory ring hunting.

⭐ Short Review: A Triumph for 2.5D Platformers
The Good
Outstanding Visuals & Soundtrack: Gorgeous dark-fantasy art design, fluid animations, and magnificent orchestral remakes of classic series tracks.

Deep Progression & Replayability: The addition of RPG-like equipment upgrades, shield mechanics, and hidden stages makes exploration hugely rewarding.

Multiple Difficulty Options: Novice mode opens up the game to casual players while Ultimate mode retains the brutal challenge die-hard fans expect.

The Bad
Backtracking for True Ending: Collecting all 33 Rings of Light requires revisiting earlier levels with late-game magic powers, which can drag out the pacing.

Strict Collision Hitboxes: Precise jumping and positioning remain mandatory; a single misstep can still result in instant death pits.
