LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 (2011) serves as the magical conclusion to the LEGO Wizarding World saga on the PSP. Developed by TT Tales, it covers the final three books and four films (Order of the Phoenix through Deathly Hallows Part 2). While the console version offered a massive open-world Hogwarts, the PSP version was tailored into a more linear, puzzle-focused experience that was much better suited for on-the-go play.

Story & Premise

The tone of the story shifts significantly from the “whimsy” of the first four years to the “darkness” of the return of Lord Voldemort.

The Plot: You follow Harry, Ron, and Hermione as they leave the safety of Hogwarts to track down and destroy Voldemort’s Horcruxes. The game covers iconic moments like the Battle at the Ministry of Magic, the formation of Dumbledore’s Army, and the final epic Siege of Hogwarts. Despite the darker stakes, the game maintains the classic LEGO humor, using silent slapstick comedy to retell even the most tragic scenes.

THE SPECTACULAR FINALE TO THE MAGIC!

“Based on the last three Harry Potter books and final four films, LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 takes you on a journey through new locations like Grimmauld Place, the Ministry of Magic, and Godric’s Hollow. Master advanced magical skills and encounter new faces as you prepare for the ultimate showdown with Lord Voldemort.

Unlock over 150 characters, including Bellatrix Lestrange and Fenrir Greyback. Use the all-new Dueling Mechanic to master your wand-work and learn powerful new spells like the Unforgivable Curses or the Patronus Charm. Whether you’re exploring the Room of Requirement or flying through the streets of London, the magic is in your hands.

Build, duel, and laugh your way through the greatest wizarding battle of all time.

Key Gameplay Mechanics

  • Wand-Based Dueling: A new feature for the second half of the series. Characters enter a “duel” mode where you must match button prompts to deflect spells and overpower your opponent in a magical tug-of-war.

  • Spell Wheel: As you progress, you unlock specialized spells. Aguamenti is used to put out fires or fill containers, while Diffindo is used to cut shapes out of red LEGO walls to create new paths.

  • Weasley Boxes: Exclusive to the Weasley family (or those with the Potion), these boxes provide wacky gadgets like Decoy Detonators or Sticky Trainers to walk up walls.

  • Character Hub: While Hogwarts is smaller on the PSP, you still use the Leaky Cauldron and Diagon Alley as your main hubs to purchase new characters, red bricks (cheats), and gold bricks.

Short Review: A Darker Shade of Plastic

The Good

  • Technical Polish: By 2011, TT Fusion had mastered the PSP hardware. The lighting effects on the spells and the character models are some of the best in the LEGO handheld library.

  • Huge Roster: With 150+ characters, the “Free Play” mode offers massive replayability as you return to levels with new abilities (like using Dark Magic or Strength) to find hidden secrets.

  • Bite-Sized Levels: Unlike the console version’s long levels, these are broken into smaller chunks, making it easy to earn a “True Wizard” rank during a quick break.

The Bad

  • Linear Hub: Fans of the first game might be disappointed that Hogwarts is less of an “explorable castle” and more of a series of connected hallways on the PSP.

  • No Voice Acting: Like most LEGO games of this era, it uses grunts and mumbles. While charming, some of the complex plot points of the later films can be a bit hard to follow if you haven’t seen the movies.
