Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere (1999) is perhaps the most ambitious—and infamous—entry in the series on the PlayStation 1. It moved the franchise into a futuristic, cyberpunk setting, featuring a deep branching narrative and a distinct visual style inspired by classic sci-fi anime like Ghost in the Shell.

Story & Premise

Set in the year 2040, the world is no longer ruled by nations, but by massive conglomerates: General Resource and Neucom. You play as a pilot for UPEO (a peacekeeping force). As tensions between the corporations escalate into a global war, you must choose where your loyalties lie.

The “Electrosphere” refers to the game’s advanced internet/neural network, where the line between human consciousness and artificial intelligence begins to blur.

Back Cover Description

“THE FUTURE OF FLIGHT IS HERE.”

“Welcome to the year 2040. The sky is a corporate battlefield. Engage in high-stakes aerial combat with 23 futuristic aircraft designed for maximum lethality.

Battle through 36 intense missions featuring massive airborne fortresses, city-shattering dogfights, and high-altitude space combat! Experience the ‘COFFIN’ system—a revolutionary neural link between pilot and plane. With a pulse-pounding electronic soundtrack and stunning 3D graphics, Ace Combat 3 takes the fight to a new dimension.

Total air superiority is the only way to survive.

Key Gameplay Features

  • Futuristic Aircraft: You pilot fictional, highly advanced planes like the Delphinus series and the X-49 Night Raven. Many feature the “COFFIN” system (no windows, just external cameras fed into the pilot’s brain).

  • Space Combat: One of the few entries in the series to include missions set outside the atmosphere, requiring you to manage different physics and weapons.

  • Dynamic UI: The game features a sleek, “hacker” aesthetic with blue and white menus that make you feel like you are plugged into a computer network.

  • Electronic Score: Moving away from the rock of Ace Combat 2, the soundtrack features atmospheric techno and ambient tracks that fit the cyberpunk vibe.

Short Review: A Visual Masterpiece

The Good

  • Technical Achievement: This is one of the best-looking games on the PS1. The lighting, transparency effects, and plane models are breathtaking.

  • Innovation: The sci-fi setting allowed for much more creative mission objectives and boss fights than previous titles.

  • Atmosphere: Even in the stripped-down Western version, the “feel” of the game is incredibly cool and unique.

The Bad

  • The Localization: If you aren’t playing the Japanese version (or the modern fan-translation), you are missing out on one of the best stories in gaming history.

  • Control Sensitivity: The futuristic planes are very fast and twitchy, which can take some time to master compared to the jets in Ace Combat 2.
