Air Combat (1995)—originally released in Japan as Ace Combat—is the historic birth of one of gaming’s most legendary franchises. Developed and published by Namco, this title was an incredible showcase for the original PlayStation’s 3D hardware at launch, perfectly striking a balance between accessible arcade controls and cinematic military drama.

Story & Premise: The Mercenary Crisis

A violent, highly organized terrorist organization has launched a massive coup d’état against a peaceful nation, seizing control of vital military installations, oil refineries, and an entire fleet of advanced fighter jets.

The Assignment: The desperate government turns to a elite mercenary tactical squadron code-named Scarface. You play as “Phoenix,” a rookie mercenary pilot flying under the iconic phoenix-emblazoned tail fin. Your objective is to systematically dismantle the terrorist occupation force across 17 distinct combat sectors, getting paid cold hard cash for every target you reduce to scrap metal.

Back Cover Description

“THE ONLY THING MORE THRILLING THAN GETTING REALT-TIME CASUALTY REPORTS IS GENERATING THEM.”

“Strap into the cockpit of the world’s most advanced military aircraft for the ultimate 3D aerial dogfight! Air Combat delivers blistering, high-octane arcade action right to your living room.

Fly a fleet of ultra-realistic, multi-million dollar fighters including the F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-22 Raptor, Stealth Fighter, and the Su-27 Flanker. Engage in fierce dogfights against aggressive enemy squadrons, protect vital supply lines, and execute dangerous low-altitude bombing runs. Earn bounties to purchase upgrades and hire mercenary wingmen to watch your back.

The sky is a dangerous place. Take control or get shot down.

Key Gameplay Features

  • Dynamic Aircraft Progression: As you clear missions and destroy targets, you earn cash. You can use these funds to purchase a roster of 16 different authentic military jets, each with varied stats in speed, maneuverability, and missile capacity.

  • Hire a Wingman: Uniquely for the era, you can use your earned mercenary pay to hire a computer-controlled wingman before a mission. You can issue basic commands like “Cover Me” or “Attack Free” to help manage chaotic dogfights.

  • 17 Diverse Missions: The campaign isn’t just a mindless shoot-em-up; missions range from high-altitude interception and defensive canyon runs to night-time naval fleet strikes.

  • Iconic Visual Customization: When purchasing higher-tier jets, they come adorned in the mercenary group’s signature bright pink-and-white camouflage pattern, a striking contrast to traditional military greys.

Short Review: The Blueprint for a Franchise

The Good

  • Timeless Controls: Namco nailed the flight model out of the gate. It features two control styles: an accessible “Novice” mode that handles like an arcade shooter, and a “Pro” mode that introduces realistic pitch and roll mechanics.

  • Incredible Music: The soundtrack is an unforgettable mix of high-energy 90s rock, techno, and smooth jazz that makes every dogfight feel incredibly cinematic.

  • Satisfying Loop: Saving up your hard-earned bounty money to finally purchase an advanced jet like the F-22 or the stealth fighter is intensely rewarding.

The Bad

  • Visual Pop-In: Being a 1995 release, the ground textures are heavily pixelated up close, and the landscape suffers from noticeable “pop-in” as you fly at high speeds.

  • Lack of Checkpoints: Missions must be completed in a single go. If you crash into the ground or get shot down right at the very end of a 10-minute sortie, you have to restart from the beginning.
