Alundra (1997) is often hailed as the “Zelda for grown-ups.” Developed by Matrix Software—a team comprised of veterans who worked on the iconic Landstalker—it remains one of the most challenging, dark, and emotionally resonant action-RPGs on the PlayStation 1.

Story & Premise

You play as Alundra, a youth from the Elna clan with the rare ability to “walk” into people’s dreams. After being shipwrecked, he arrives in the village of Inoa, a place plagued by a mysterious curse that traps its inhabitants in horrific nightmares from which they never wake.

The Darker Side of Fate: Unlike the whimsical adventures typical of the era, Alundra deals with heavy themes of death, religious fanaticism, and loss. As Alundra enters the minds of the villagers to fight their demons, he realizes he cannot save everyone. The story is famous for its “Working Designs” translation, which added flavor and personality to the dialogue.

Back Cover Description

“BEYOND YOUR DREAMS LIES A NIGHTMARE.”

“Step into a world where the line between reality and dreams has blurred. As Alundra, a Dreamwalker with the power to enter the minds of others, you are the only hope for a village consumed by a terrifying curse.

Explore massive, sprawling dungeons filled with the most ingenious and lethal puzzles ever devised. Battle screen-filling bosses and survive a narrative that is as beautiful as it is tragic. With lush 2D graphics, a haunting soundtrack, and over 40 hours of gameplay, Alundra is the ultimate adventure for those who dare to dream.

The nightmare is real. Only you can wake them up.

Key Gameplay Features

  • Diabolical Puzzles: Alundra is notorious for its difficulty. The puzzles require a mix of platforming precision, timing, and genuine logic that far surpasses the complexity of most Zelda games.

  • Dream Walking: The core mechanic involves entering the subconscious of NPCs. These “Dream Dungeons” often reflect the personality or the trauma of the dreamer, resulting in unique visual designs and hazards.

  • Combat & Magic: Combat is fast-paced and top-down. Alundra utilizes swords, maces, bows, and powerful elemental magic (Fire, Water, Wind, Earth) to dispatch enemies.

  • Gorgeous 2D Spritework: Released during the “3D revolution,” Alundra stuck to high-quality, hand-drawn 2D sprites and detailed environments, which have aged significantly better than many early 3D PS1 titles.

Short Review: A Masterpiece of Challenge

The Good

  • Uncompromising Difficulty: If you find modern games too hand-holdy, Alundra will be a breath of fresh air. Solving a dungeon here feels like a genuine achievement.

  • Strong Narrative: The stakes feel high because the characters you interact with are mortal; the game isn’t afraid to kill off key NPCs.

  • Vibrant World: The village of Inoa feels like a living place, and the soundtrack by Kohei Tanaka is nothing short of legendary.

The Bad

  • Platforming Frustrations: Because the game uses an isometric-leaning top-down view, judging jump distance and height can occasionally be tricky, leading to accidental deaths.

  • No Mercy: Some puzzles are so obtuse they might have you reaching for a guide within the first few hours.
