Alundra (1997)—released in Europe as The Adventures of Alundra—is widely celebrated as one of the finest, most emotionally gripping action-RPG masterpieces on the PlayStation 1. Developed by Matrix Software and containing key staff members who created Sega’s legendary Landstalker, the game is frequently dubbed “The PlayStation’s answer to The Legend of Zelda.”
However, unlike the whimsical tone of most classic Zelda games, Alundra is famous for its mature, uncomfortably dark storyline, incredibly complex puzzle design, and gorgeous, high-fidelity 2D sprite work.
Story & Premise: The Dreamwalker’s Burden
You take control of Alundra, a silent, elf-like youth belonging to the ancient clan of the Elna. Alundra possesses a rare, supernatural gift: he is a “Dreamwalker,” capable of physically entering the subconscious minds of sleeping individuals. Guided by recurring nightmares of a waking god of destruction, Alundra finds himself shipwrecked on the shores of the isolated village of Inoa.
The Curse: The villagers of Inoa are plagued by a horrific epidemic. An evil deity named Melzas is twisting their dreams into terrifying, inescapable nightmares. If a villager dies inside their nightmare, they die in the real world. Alundra must use his powers to dive into the brains of the locals, battling their inner demons to save them before they wake up dead.

Key Gameplay Features
-
Top-Down Action Exploration: The game features a classic, beautifully animated overhead perspective. Alundra can jump, run, swim, slash with a variety of melee weapons, and cast powerful elemental magic spells.
-
Mind-Bending Dungeon Puzzles: Alundra is notorious for having some of the most brutal, brilliant, and uncompromising puzzle designs in gaming history. They require spatial awareness, tight platforming timing, and logic-based problem solving (like arranging heavy pillars or reflecting light beams).
-
The Nightmare Dungeons: Because you are diving into different people’s minds, the dungeon environments vary wildly based on the host’s personality—ranging from a frozen tundra of depression to a chaotic, burning maze of madness.
-
Uncompromisingly Mature Narrative: The game does not pull punches. It deals heavily with themes of grief, religious fanaticism, death, and existential dread. Characters you grow to love throughout the village will die, and you cannot save everyone.
-
Working Designs Localization: The North American release was handled by the legendary Working Designs, meaning the game shipped with a premium embossed manual, a gorgeous fold-out map of the world, and a sharp, witty script translation.
Short Review: A Masterpiece That Tests Your Brain
The Good
-
Stunning 2D Art Style: Released during an era when early, blocky 3D polygons were taking over, Alundra leaned heavily into breathtaking, fluidly animated 2D pixel art that has aged flawlessly.
-
Incredible Music: Composed by Kohei Tanaka, the soundtrack switches effortlessly from cheerful, cozy village melodies to sweeping, sweeping orchestral dungeon scores that heighten the tension.
-
Deep Emotional Resonance: The stakes feel incredibly real because you get to know the villagers personally before diving into their heads to fight for their lives.
The Bad
-
Extreme Difficulty Spikes: Some of the late-game puzzles and platforming sections require pixel-perfect precision. It is a game that can easily leave players completely stuck without a strategy guide.
-
Punishing Boss Battles: Enemies and bosses hit incredibly hard, and if you haven’t diligently hunted down hidden “Life Vessels” to increase your maximum health, you will see the game over screen frequently.
