Angelique: Maren no Rokukishi (2011)—translated as Enchanting Love of the Six Knights—is a unique crossover title in the otome world. It is a collaboration between Ruby Party (the creators of Angelique) and Otomate, bringing a darker, narrative-focused visual novel style to the typically lighthearted Angelique universe.

• Basis: It is based on the light novel Angelique Tenkuu no Requiem ~Kuroki Tsubasa no Moto ni~, serving as a prequel to the events of the game Angelique: Tenkuu no Requiem.

Plot: A Darker Shade of Ivalice

Unlike the “Queen Selection” exams of the main series, this game is a gritty wartime drama.

• The Protagonist: You play as Teresa, an orphan girl living a peaceful life until her younger “brother” (raised together), Renaud, goes missing.

• The Conflict: While searching for him, Teresa discovers he has joined the Maren no Rokukishi (The Six Knights of Magical Love), a mercenary group led by the charismatic and rebellious Leviath.

• The Mystery: Teresa joins the camp to stay close to Renaud, only to discover she possesses a mysterious power that is vital to Leviath’s rebellion against the nobility.

The Six Knights (Romance Options)

Though the group has nine knights, only six are primary romance targets in this game:

1. Eugene: The serious and stoic strategist.

2. Cain: The hot-headed and energetic fighter.

3. Sionna: The elegant, somewhat feminine-looking knight with a sharp tongue.

4. Kiefar: The dependable and mature “big brother” figure.

5. Gerhard: The strict, older knight with a strong sense of duty.

6. Giovanni: The flirtatious and mysterious charmer.

• Leviath: The leader. His route is the “Grand Finale” and only unlocks after completing the others.

•  Gameplay Mechanics: Classic Otomate

• Visual Novel Standard: Unlike the simulation-heavy main Angelique games, this is a pure visual novel. You progress through text and make choices that branch the story.

• Love Catch System: A visual indicator (which can be toggled in options) that flashes to let you know if a choice increased your standing with a character.

• Bad Signs: Similarly, the game will flash a “Bad Sign” if you make a choice leading toward one of the game’s many tragic endings.

• Chronicle Mode: A flowchart that allows you to review unlocked scenes and branching paths, making it easier to hunt for 100% completion.

The Good

• Mature Narrative: It’s one of the most serious stories in the Angelique franchise, dealing with themes of loss, war, and sacrifice.

• Beautiful Art: The character designs by Yuuhi Higashi are gorgeous and fit the somber tone of the rebellion perfectly.

• Voice Acting: Top-tier performances from the male cast bring a lot of weight to the dramatic wartime scenes.

The Bad

• Lack of “Sim” Elements: Fans of the original Angelique might miss the planet-cultivation and social management systems, as this is strictly a reading experience.

• Trial and Error: Without the “Love Catch” turned on, the choices can be quite cryptic, often leading to sudden Bad Endings.
