Anna Kournikova’s Smash Court Tennis (1998) is a brightly colored, incredibly addictive arcade tennis masterpiece released on the PlayStation 1. Developed and published by Namco, it is the European and Australian localized version of Smash Court 2.
To appeal to Western markets, Namco licensed the likeness of Russian tennis superstar and pop-culture icon Anna Kournikova, making her the marquee star of an otherwise wonderfully eccentric, character-driven sports game.

While the game features real-world tennis scoring and a licensed superstar in Anna Kournikova, it firmly rejects the dry, hyper-serious approach of traditional sports simulations. Instead, it serves up a fast, highly responsive arcade experience packed with fictional characters, unlockable secrets, and beautiful, cartoonish visuals.
The title screen immediately sets the tone with a bouncy, energetic synth track. Once on the court, you are just as likely to play a match on a sun-drenched tropical beach or inside a packed medieval castle as you are at a traditional stadium.

The Good
