Armored Core: Project Phantasma (1997) is the explosive, high-octane standalone expansion to the original Armored Core on the PlayStation 1. Developed by the legendary FromSoftware and published by ASCII Entertainment in the West, this game established the studio’s tradition of releasing massive, content-stuffed follow-ups that allow players to carry over their custom save files.

Project Phantasma took the rock-solid, deep mech-customization mechanics of the 1997 original and injected a much tighter narrative, terrifying new parts, and a mode that would define the franchise for decades: The Arena.

Story & Premise: The Shadows of Amber Crown

Instead of working as a completely blind corporate mercenary like in the first game, you are hired for a highly secretive, high-stakes operation inside a subterranean city known as Amber Crown.

Your client is Sumika Juutilainen, a fierce, rogue mech pilot who has stumbled upon a horrific, off-the-books research operation called Project Phantasma. Run by a shadowy, rogue military group known as the Doomsday Organization, this project aims to develop a weapon of absolute destruction—a hyper-advanced Raven-annihilator known as the Phantasma.

To prevent a catastrophic shift in global corporate power, you must drop into the depths of Amber Crown, break through automated experimental defenses, and hunt down the Doomsday Organization’s ruthless ace pilot, Stinger.

Back Cover Description

“MORE POWER. MORE PARTS. TOTAL MECH DOMINATION.”

“The mechanized war escalates to a lethal new level! Armored Core: Project Phantasma drops you into a dark, subterranean web of corporate conspiracies and experimental warfare.

Build the ultimate killing machine with dozens of brand-new customizable parts, including high-impact plasma cannons, energy shields, and experimental booster cores. Import your battle-hardened Raven from the original Armored Core or build a mechanical terror from scratch. Face off against 50 lethal combatants in the brutal, cash-rewarding Arena Mode, or survive a gripping 17-mission story campaign.

The Doomsday Organization is ready for war. Are you?

Key Gameplay Features

  • Save Data Conversion: A massive feature for fans. If you have a completed save file from the first Armored Core, you can import your exact mech, your bank account balance, and all your unlocked parts right into the beginning of Project Phantasma.
  • The Birth of the Arena: This expansion officially introduced the iconic Arena Mode. Separate from the story campaign, you can challenge a ladder of 50 distinct AI Raven pilots in head-to-head, gladiator-style deathmatches to earn massive credit payouts and unlock secret, ultra-powerful mech components.
  • Expanded Customization Pool: The game injected a wealth of new parts into the garage. Players gained access to specialized weapon classes like Weapon Arms (where your arms are the guns, sacrificing hand-held versatility for raw, rapid-fire damage) and early variants of back-mounted missiles.
  • Intense Boss Design: Moving away from standard military tanks and target blocks, Project Phantasma features genuine, multi-stage boss fights—culminating in a terrifying showdown against Stinger’s colossal, multi-segmented experimental Phantasma mech unit.

Short Review: A Phenomenal, Pure Refinement

The Good

  • Arena Mode is Addictive: The addition of the Arena completely transformed the replay value of the game. Climbing the ranks, analyzing rival builds, and countering their weapon loadouts is an absolute blast.
  • Tighter Mission Variety: The 17 missions are highly cinematic and memorable compared to the original game’s sometimes sterile level layouts. You’ll escape crumbling factories, engage in high-speed elevator dogfights, and conduct deep subterranean search-and-destroy ops.
  • Smoother Performance: The game engine feels slightly more optimized, managing large explosions and heavy polygon models with fewer dramatic frame-rate drops than its predecessor.

The Bad

  • The Infamous Controls: Like all PS1-era Armored Core games, the control layout is notorious. Because it predated standard dual-analog movement, you use the D-pad to move, the lower shoulders (L1/R1) to strafe, and the upper shoulders (L2/R2) to look up and down. It requires a heavy dose of muscle memory to master.
  • Short Campaign: The core story mode is relatively brief, featuring only 17 missions that seasoned pilots can tear through in an afternoon.
