Ark of Time (1997)—originally released in Europe and developed in Italy by Trecision—is a fascinatingly obscure, classic point-and-click graphic adventure game ported to the PlayStation 1. While PC gamers were intimately familiar with this style of mystery-solving, console ports of traditional graphic adventures were incredibly rare on the PS1, making this game a unique curiosity for western collectors.

The game combines historical myths, ancient conspiracies, and standard 90s puzzle-solving, channeling the distinct globe-trotting vibes of Broken Sword or Indiana Jones.

Story & Premise: The Secret of Atlantis

The narrative centers around Richard Foster, a talented, somewhat cynical sports journalist based in a bustling American city. Richard’s mundane career takes a sudden, dramatic turn when his editor handpicks him for a bizarre, high-stakes international assignment.

The Missing Professor: A world-renowned archaeologist, Professor herbert, has mysteriously vanished without a trace. Before disappearing, the professor was on the absolute brink of proving the real-world existence of the legendary sunken continent of Atlantis.

Armed with only a handful of vague notes and a plane ticket, Richard must step out of his comfort zone and travel across the globe—from the historical ruins of Stonehenge and the mysterious Easter Island to Caribbean pirate haunts and the arid deserts of Egypt. Along the way, he must pieces together ancient artifacts to find the professor and unlock an ominous power capable of altering the fabric of time itself.

Key Gameplay Features

  • Traditional Point-and-Click Interface: The game relies completely on a virtual screen cursor. Players move the cursor over the hand-painted screens to change scenes, examine ambient background objects, talk to NPCs, and pick up key items.
  • Globe-Trotting Hub World: The game isn’t linear. Once Richard gathers enough initial clues, you can use a world map interface to fly dynamically between iconic real-world locations like Egypt, Yucatan, Stonehenge, and Easter Island to solve interconnected puzzles.
  • Deep Inventory Combinations: True to old-school adventure game design, your inventory is your greatest weapon. You must frequently collect seemingly useless objects (like wires, old coins, or specific keys) and combine them logically within your inventory menu to overcome environmental roadblocks.
  • Atmospheric 2D Presentation: The game utilizes clean, hand-drawn 2D character sprites layered on top of gorgeous, atmospheric static background illustrations that capture the historical, mysterious mood of the narrative perfectly.
  • PlayStation Mouse Support: To mitigate the clunkiness of using a standard PS1 directional pad to move an on-screen mouse cursor, the developers built in full compatibility with the rare PlayStation Mouse accessory for a true PC-style experience.

Short Review: A Highly Engaging, Overlooked Conundrum

The Good

  • Intriguing Supernatural Plot: The storyline hooks you quickly. It does a fantastic job blending real-world historical architectural anomalies with fun, pulp-fiction sci-fi conspiracy theories.
  • Beautiful Background Art: The hand-drawn locations are visually striking, detailed, and packed with wonderful cultural atmosphere that makes exploring new countries highly rewarding.
  • Challenging Logic Puzzles: If you love mental exercise, the puzzles require genuine deduction and out-of-the-box thinking rather than brainless action.

The Bad

Rare & Hard to Find: Because it never received a North American NTSC release and had a relatively small print run in Europe, finding a physical PAL copy today can be quite a challenge for retro collectors.

D-Pad Cursor Friction: Playing a point-and-click adventure game with a standard PS1 controller can feel slow and sluggish, as dragging the cursor back and forth across the screen to search for pixels lacks the snappy speed of a real mouse.

Occasional “Pixel Hunting”: Some vital items are incredibly small and blend seamlessly into the background scenery. You will occasionally find yourself clicking randomly around the screen out of sheer frustration trying to find a tiny object you missed.
