Arthur! Ready to Race (2000) is a unique slice of nostalgia for anyone who grew up watching the beloved PBS Kids animated series based on Marc Brown’s books. Developed by Runecraft and published by The Learning Company (and Mattel Interactive), this PlayStation 1 title is an “edutainment” game specifically designed for younger children.

Instead of a high-speed, intense racer like Crash Team Racing, it’s a gentle, narrative-driven adventure that teaches basic problem-solving skills, requiring zero reading comprehension thanks to full voice acting for all characters.

Story & Premise: Building the Dream Racer

The annual Elwood City Soap Box Racing Championship has officially arrived! Arthur Read and his friends are incredibly excited to enter, but they quickly realize their old, broken-down “junker” soap box car is much too slow to compete against the rest of the neighborhood.

The Quest for Parts: To build the ultimate “Dream Racer,” Arthur needs your help exploring Elwood City. By wandering around town and completing various mini-games and chores for his friends and family, Arthur can collect essential building components, paint, and special Bionic Bunny trading cards that can be traded at the local shop for cool car accessories.

Once the car is fully upgraded with better wheels, aerodynamic bodies, and custom decals, Arthur can finally hit the tracks to secure the fastest time on the leaderboard.

Key Gameplay Features

  • Adventure Mode Structure: The single-player mode doesn’t just put you on a track. Instead, you guide Arthur through a hub-world version of Elwood City, triggering simple 3D tasks and puzzles. Memorable mini-games include:
    • Muffy’s Tomato Garden: Helping Muffy sort or harvest crops.
    • Chasing Pal: Running after Arthur’s energetic puppy, Pal, through obstacles.
    • Finding Baby Kate: Tracking down Arthur’s baby sister in chaotic areas like the local Toy Shop.
  • The Blueprint Screen: Pressing the START button pauses the game and takes you to Arthur’s garage blueprint layout. This screen visually tracks your progress, showing exactly which parts of the customized soap box car you have unlocked and built so far.
  • Soap Box Racing Mechanics: The racing segments are strictly time-trial based. Because soap box cars rely purely on gravity and momentum, the goal isn’t to drift or blast enemies with weapons; instead, you navigate winding tracks while carefully avoiding slowing obstacles like oil slicks, puddles, and loose rocks.
  • 1 to 4 Player Multiplayer Mode: Up to four players can participate in a turn-based racing mode. Players take turns selecting a character—such as Arthur, Buster, Francine, or Muffy—and driving down a selected track. The game logs everyone’s final times and bonus items collected on an arcade-style scoreboard to crown a champion.
  • Full Audio Prompt Accessibility: True to its educational roots, the game features complete voice acting for all menus, instructions, and character dialogue. Younger children who cannot read yet can navigate the entire game independently by simply listening to the spoken instructions.

Short Review: Pure Nostalgia for the Youngest Gamers

The Good

  • Authentic Voice Cast: The game utilizes the actual voice clips and recognizable music from the television show, making you feel like you are directly playing through a classic episode of the cartoon.
  • Incredibly Kid-Friendly: The inclusion of DualShock vibration whenever you hit a bump, simple directional controls, and constant audio guidance makes it a fantastic, frustration-free “first video game” for toddlers or young children.

The Bad

Short Playtime: A full run through the single-player adventure mode takes less than an hour to complete from start to finish.

No Appeal for Older Gamers: If you are looking for a deep, mechanically rewarding racing game, this isn’t it. The mini-games are incredibly basic, and the soap box driving sections require very little actual skill or speed.
