Battle Stations (1997)—often referred to as Battlestations—is an incredibly unique naval combat strategy game released during the early prime of the PlayStation 1. Developed by Realtime Associates and published by Electronic Arts, the game takes the foundational, grid-based guessing logic of the classic childhood board game Battleship and transforms it into a frantic, real-time 3D tactical simulation.
Instead of taking turns calling out coordinates on a flat plastic board, Battle Stations forces you into the hot seat of an active naval commander, managing real-time fleet positioning, firing trajectories, and resource allocation.
Story & Premise: The Oceanic Cold War
The game is set across a series of fictional modern military campaigns where global naval supremacy is hanging completely in the balance. Tensions between rival global superpower factions have officially boiled over into all-out wet warfare across the world’s major shipping lanes, island chains, and deep-ocean channels.
As a newly appointed Fleet Admiral, you aren’t just commanding a single vessel. You are given absolute tactical authority over an entire armada. Across 50 branching single-player missions, your objective shifts dynamically between seeking out and vaporizing hidden enemy fleets, escorting vulnerable supply carriers through minefields, and laying siege to heavily fortified island military installations.
Key Gameplay Features
- Real-Time Strategic Grid Maps: The gameplay alternates beautifully between a macro-tactical strategy layer and a micro-combat view. On the tactical map, you view the ocean from a bird’s-eye radar grid. Here, you issue navigation coordinates to your fleet, deploy scouting radar planes to clear the fog of war, and hunt for anomalous blips indicating enemy positions.
- Direct 3D Action Interventions: The second one of your ships makes contact with an enemy vessel, the game seamlessly transitions into a 3D real-time combat arena. Players take direct, manual control of the active vessel from a top-down tracking perspective. You must physically steer the ship, account for momentum turning circles, and manually aim your deck guns and torpedo tubes to land hits on moving targets.

Short Review: An Underrated, Highly Tense Strategy Hybrid
The Good
- Brilliant Hybrid Structure: Blending the cerebral pacing of a grid-based strategy layout with the immediate, arcade satisfaction of driving a battleship and manually aiming giant artillery cannons was incredibly innovative for 1997.
- Excellent Tension Mechanics: The fog-of-war implementation creates genuine anxiety. Tracking a mysterious radar blip through a tight island canyon, not knowing if it’s a tiny PT boat or a massive enemy battleship waiting to ambush you, is wonderfully suspenseful.
The Bad
- Steep Learning Curve: Managing multiple ships simultaneously in real time can quickly become overwhelming. The game does not pause while you are manually controlling a single ship’s cannons, meaning your other vessels can be blindly attacked across the map if you aren’t constantly hot-swapping between them.
- Sluggish Turning Physics: While realistic to naval physics, the incredibly slow turning circles and heavy momentum drag of the larger ships can feel frustratingly sluggish to players used to fast-paced arcade action.
