FIFA Soccer 06 (2005) was a turning point for the franchise on the PSP, fixing many of the technical hurdles that plagued the system’s debut entry. While the console versions boasted a complete engine overhaul, the PSP version focused on being “built for handheld,” resulting in smoother gameplay and the introduction of unique portable features.

Game Premise

This edition carried the tagline “You Play. They Obey.” It focused on providing the “total soccer experience” with a massive roster of 26 licensed leagues and over 10,000 players. For the PSP, the developers prioritized fixing the input lag and slow menu navigation from the previous year, creating a much more responsive and fluid experience.

Back Cover Description

THE TOTAL SOCCER EXPERIENCE.

“Take the world’s game with you wherever you go! FIFA Soccer 06 on the PSP brings you closer to the pitch than ever before. With a completely revamped engine, experience responsive controls that let you dominate every touch and tackle.

Build a dynasty in the deep 15-year Manager Mode, or test your reflexes in the all-new Juggling mini-game exclusive to the PSP. Featuring authentic commentary, realistic player faces, and the most licensed teams in the business, FIFA 06 is the ultimate way to play soccer on the move. From the international stage to the local club, the glory is in your hands.

They play by your rules.

Key Gameplay Features

  • First Touch Control: Re-mapped for the PSP’s single analog stick, this feature allowed you to trap the ball and immediately burst into space or flick it past a defender by holding the L button.

  • Juggling Mini-Game: A PSP-exclusive mode that required you to turn the console 45 degrees counter-clockwise (holding it vertically). You used the D-pad to keep the ball in the air, testing your timing and rhythm.

  • 15-Year Manager Mode: A surprisingly deep career mode for a handheld, where you managed transfers, team chemistry, and club finances over more than a decade of play.

  • Refined Chemistry: A new “Chemistry” system determined how well your team played together based on their recent performances and morale, making management as important as the action on the field.

  • Wireless Multiplayer: Allowed for Ad-Hoc matches against friends, featuring surprisingly stable connections for the time.

Short Review: The Handheld Renaissance

The Good

  • Technical Fixes: Unlike FIFA 2005 (which felt like a PS2 game struggling to run), FIFA 06 is snappy, with fast-loading menus and responsive player movement.

  • PSP-Centric Design: Features like the Juggling mini-game and the re-mapped controls showed that EA was finally thinking about how to make the game feel right on a portable screen.

  • Atmosphere: The commentary by Clive Tyldesley and Andy Gray, paired with the legendary “FIFA 06” soundtrack, made it feel like a premium AAA experience.

The Bad

  • Tiny Player Models: To ensure a smooth frame rate, the players appear quite small on the screen, which can make it hard to distinguish specific faces during gameplay.

  • Missing Home-Console Features: Some of the visual flourishes like “dynamic grass” or the most complex skill move animations didn’t make the cut for the handheld version.
