Iron Man 2 (2010) arrived with the sequel film but took a different approach than the first game. Developed by High Voltage Software for the PSP, it moved away from the “open flight” frustration of the original and adopted a more structured, tactical combat system inspired by games like Resistance: Retribution.

Game Story & Premise

While it exists in the movie universe, the game features an original story written by renowned Invincible Iron Man comic author Matt Fraction.

Back Cover Description:

“Play as Iron Man or, for the first time ever, War Machine! This brand-new story thrusts you deep into the Iron Man comic world, adding to the excitement of the film. Battle epic enemies like the classic villain Crimson Dynamo—only featured in the game—and an incredible final boss of truly staggering, skyscraping scale.Research, develop, and refine your technology from Tony Stark’s base of operations. Customize your suit and weaponry to feel the impact of unrivaled firepower. In the end, the fate of the world will be left in Iron Man and War Machine’s powerful hands—they must battle to save it from destruction!”

The Plot:

The game starts with Tony Stark defending the “Dataspine”—an archived version of J.A.R.V.I.S.—from the Roxxon Energy Corporation. The story quickly expands to include S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury and Black Widow as they investigate a conspiracy involving General Shatalov, the terrorist group A.I.M., and the creation of the massive Ultimo and the Crimson Dynamo armor.

Secrets & Unlocks

Unlike the first game, Iron Man 2 focuses more on gameplay milestones to unlock its legendary suits.

Classic Mark II Complete the “One Man Army vs. Ten Rings” Challenge

Unlockable Upgrades

  • Tech Points: Earned by defeating enemies and completing missions. Spend these in Stark’s lab between missions to upgrade your repulsors, missiles, and melee strength.

  • Scanner: The PSP version features a unique scanner tool. Upgrading this helps you identify enemy weaknesses and find hidden in-game secrets/intel.

Key Gameplay Features

  • War Machine: You can finally play as James Rhodes. While Iron Man is faster and relies on energy weapons (lasers/repulsors), War Machine is a tank with heavy ballistic weaponry (gatling guns/missiles).

  • Refined Controls: The PSP version uses a “hit box” lock-on system. This means you don’t need precise aiming; as long as the enemy is in your targeting box, your shots will home in, making the fast-paced combat much more manageable on a handheld.

  • In-Air Flight Levels: While most of the game is “hovering” combat, there are dedicated high-speed flight missions where you dodge obstacles and shoot down pursuers in a rail-shooter style.

  • Destructible Environments: You can blow holes through walls and destroy enemy structures to create new paths or defensive cover.

Short Review: The Armored Sequel

The Good

  • The Story: Having Matt Fraction write the script makes it feel like a legitimate Iron Man comic adventure rather than a cheap movie tie-in.

  • War Machine: Playing as Rhodey feels distinct and powerful; his heavy-metal combat style is a fan favorite.

  • Boss Battles: Fighting screen-filling enemies like Ultimo provides the “epic” feel the first game lacked.

The Bad

  • Visuals: Like its predecessor, the graphics can be blocky, and the environments often feel drab and industrial.

  • Limited Movement: Outside of specific flight levels, Tony moves surprisingly slow on foot, which can make large rooms feel tedious to cross.
