Miami Vice: The Game (2006) is a PSP-exclusive third-person shooter that stands out as one of the better movie tie-ins on the system. Developed by Rebellion (the studio behind Sniper Elite), it opted for a gritty, modern tactical approach rather than trying to replicate the neon-80s camp of the original TV show.
The Premise: Undercover in South Beach
Instead of following the movie’s plot, the game tells its own story about Crockett and Tubbs attempting to bring down a South American drug lord named Sacrenegra.
-
Infiltration: To get close to the cartel, you have to build a “badass” reputation.
-
The Dual Life: You act as a cop during missions but must act like a high-stakes criminal in between them to navigate the underworld.
-
Modern Vibe: The aesthetic matches the film’s “digital noir” look—lots of dark warehouses, industrial estates, and grainy textures, rather than pink sunsets and white suits.
Key Features: More Than Just Shooting
Miami Vice introduced several systems that were surprisingly deep for a handheld shooter:
-
Tactical Cover System: The gameplay is heavily inspired by Resident Evil 4 and Gears of War. You move with the analog nub but must stand still and use a laser sight to aim. Taking cover is essential; staying in the open is a quick way to get a “Game Over.”
-
The Drug Economy: In one of the game’s more controversial mechanics, you confiscate drugs during missions and then sell them to dealers on a world map. The market fluctuates, so you can “buy low and sell high” to fund weapon upgrades and new suits.
-
Reputation System: Your “Street Cred” is affected by everything: the weapons you use (low-tech gets more respect), the flashiness of your suits, and how you handle “Interactive Cutscene Encounters” (ICE).
-
Hacking Minigame: To unlock FlashRAM sticks found in levels, you play a unique “geometry wars” style arcade minigame that unlocks weapon mods and dealer locations.
-
Boat Combat: Several missions switch the perspective to high-speed boat chases through Miami’s waterways, featuring mounted turret gameplay.
Multiplayer & Co-op
The game features a full 2-Player Ad-Hoc Co-op mode. One player takes the role of Crockett and the other Tubbs. Playing together allows for actual tactical flanking, which is helpful since the AI enemies are notorious for being “dead-eye” shots.
Short Review: A Surprising Tactical Gem
The Good
-
Tight Controls: Rebellion managed to solve the PSP’s “one stick” problem by using a lock-on laser aiming system that feels natural and precise.
-
Atmospheric Visuals: For a 2006 title, the lighting and character models (based on Farrell and Foxx) look excellent on the PSP screen.
-
Addictive Meta-Game: Managing your drug inventory and hacking FlashRAMs provides a nice break from the constant shooting.
The Bad
-
Repetitive Dialogue: The enemies have a very limited pool of “tough guy” phrases (often featuring heavy profanity) that they shout incessantly.
-
Short Campaign: You can wrap up the story in about 6–8 hours.
-
Drab Colors: If you were expecting the vibrant colors of GTA: Vice City, the muddy, grey-and-brown palette of this game might be a letdown.
