Monster Hunter Nikki: Poka Poka Airu Mura (2010)—often translated as Monster Hunter Diary: Poka Poka Felyne Village—is the adorable, “life-sim” spin-off that proves even the fiercest hunters need a vacation. Developed by FromSoftware (the Elden Ring team, surprisingly!) and published by Capcom, it trades the brutal difficulty of the main series for a charming, Animal Crossing-style experience starring the series’ feline mascots, the Felynes (Airu).

The Mayor of Meow

You play as a custom Felyne who is tasked with building and expanding a village. Your goal isn’t just to hunt, but to make the village a paradise that attracts other Felynes to move in.

Game Description

The gameplay is split between Village Management and Side-Scrolling Expeditions.

Key Features:

  • Village Expansion: As you gather “Poka Poka Points,” you can build new facilities like a Guild Hall, a Farm, a Fishing Pier, and even a Poogie Park.

  • Recruitment: There are over 70 unique Felynes to recruit. Each has a specific job (Chef, Miner, Fashionista) and requires you to complete a small quest or give them a specific item to join your village.

  • Simplified Hunting: Expeditions are 2D side-scrolling missions. You lead a squad of 12 Felynes and use a “Command” system (similar to Patapon) to tell them when to attack, gather, or use skills. You’ll face “chibi” versions of classic monsters like Rathalos and Tigrex.

  • Fashion & Costumes: You can dress your Felyne in adorable outfits based on classic Monster Hunter armor, plus crossover costumes from Hello Kitty and Street Fighter.

  • Save Data Link: If you have save data from Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G or 3rd, you can import your main series Felyne comrade into the village.

Short Review: Pure “Comfy” Monster Hunter

The Good

  • The Charm Factor: The art style is “kawaii” perfection. Watching a tiny Tigrex roar in a high-pitched squeak is a joy for long-time fans of the series.

  • Relaxing Pace: Unlike the high-stress hunts of the main games, this is a “low stakes” game. It’s perfect for winding down before bed or playing in short bursts.

  • Deep Fan Service: Every item, monster, and sound effect is ripped straight from the main series but “felyne-ified.” It feels like a love letter to the MH community.

The Bad

  • Repetition: The daily loop of “Talk to cats -> Gather -> Go on one hunt” can get repetitive after a few weeks of in-game time.

  • The Language Barrier: Because it was never officially localized, you’ll need a guide or the fan patch to understand the specific “Personality” requirements for recruiting certain cats.

  • Simple Combat: If you’re looking for the technical depth of Monster Hunter, you won’t find it here. The expeditions are very basic and rely more on your squad’s stats than your reflexes.
