Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (2010) is the swan song of the franchise on the PSP. It remains one of the best-selling games in the console’s history, blending the mechanics of Monster Hunter Tri (Wii) with the classic portable feel. Even though it never received an official Western release, it is a fan favorite for its high polish and unique Japanese aesthetic.
Key Additions:
-
New Flagship Monster: Zinogre (Jinouga), the Fanged Wyvern that uses thunderbugs to charge its lightning attacks.
-
Expanded Felyne System: Unlike previous games where you only had one companion, you can now bring two Felynes on solo hunts. You can also craft specific armor and weapons for them.
-
The Bathhouse: Replaces the Felyne Kitchen. Soaking in the hot springs provides health and stamina buffs for the entire party before a hunt.
📝 Game Description
You are a hunter summoned to Yukumo to investigate a surge in monster activity, primarily caused by the appearance of the “Thunder Wolf Wyvern,” Zinogre.
Gameplay Pillars:
-
Refined Combat: Every weapon from Freedom Unite returns, including the Switch Axe from Tri. Many weapons received new moves (like the Sword & Shield’s shield bash), making combat feel faster and more fluid.
-
No Underwater Combat: While many monsters from Monster Hunter Tri return (like Royal Ludroth and Agnaktor), the controversial swimming mechanics were removed. All fights take place on land.
-
The Farm: The Yukumo farm is a massive upgrade over previous versions, featuring streamlined gathering points and “Felyne Woodcutting” or “Felyne Mining” mini-games to help you stock up on items.
-
Monsters: It features a “Best Of” roster including classics like Tigrex and Nargacuga, alongside Tri favorites and new entries like the blue bear Azuros and the poisonous Great Wroggi.
⭐ Short Review: The Most Accessible Classic
The Good
-
Visual Masterpiece: This is arguably the best-looking game on the PSP. The colors are vibrant, the armor designs are incredibly detailed, and the environments feel alive.
-
Perfect Hitboxes: Coming from Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (famous for its “invisible” hitboxes), Portable 3rd feels incredibly fair. If you get hit, it’s usually your fault, not a glitchy collision.
-
QoL Improvements: Features like the “Temporary Item Pouch” (an extra inventory row that gets sent to your box after a quest) make the game much less tedious than its predecessors.
The Bad
-
Lower Difficulty: Veterans often find this to be the easiest game in the series. The lack of a “G-Rank” (the highest difficulty tier) means the end-game doesn’t quite have the same bite as Freedom Unite.
-
Japanese Exclusive: To play it in English, you have to use a fan-translated patch. While the community translation is excellent, it adds an extra step for the average player.
-
Missing Features: If you are a fan of the underwater combat or the specific atmosphere of Tri, you might find the “land-only” versions of those monsters slightly simplified.
Verdict: Monster Hunter Portable 3rd is the perfect “entry point” for someone wanting to experience the classic, pre-World era of the series. It’s beautiful, plays smoothly, and oozes style.
