Naruto Shippuden: Narutimate Accel 3 (2009) is the Japanese title for what Western audiences know as Ultimate Ninja Heroes 3. It remains a fan favorite because it was the first portable Naruto game to feature a massive roster from the “Pain’s Assault” arc and introduced the chaotic four-player battle system.
Story & Premise
The game covers the Shippuden storyline from the Kazekage Rescue Mission all the way through the fated battle between Sasuke and Itachi, including the introduction of Pain and Konan.
The Master Road: The single-player campaign is presented as a board-game-style map. You move through nodes to trigger “Action” stages (side-scrolling platforming/combat) or “Battle” stages (traditional fighting). It even includes an original side story involving a character named Tsumuji and the “Shinnobi” organization.

Key Gameplay Features
-
4-Player Combat: A major shift from the series’ 1-on-1 roots, allowing up to four players to fight simultaneously on screen.
-
Massive Roster: Features over 50 characters. Notable additions at the time included Minato Namikaze (The Fourth Hokage), Young Kakashi, Obito Uchiha, and the members of Team Hebi.
-
Awakening Mode: Like the console versions, players can enter an “Awakening” state (e.g., Curse Mark Level 2 or Tailed Beast forms) once their health drops below a certain point.
-
Master Road: A hybrid story mode that mixes 2D fighting with side-scrolling “beat ’em up” sections and mini-games.
-
Team Jutsu: If you pick compatible characters (like Naruto and Jiraiya), you can perform special combined Ultimate Jutsu animations.
Short Review: High Energy, Low Balance
The Good
-
Visual Flair: CyberConnect2 brought their signature cinematic style to the PSP, with Ultimate Jutsu animations that still look incredible on the handheld screen.
-
Roster Depth: For a 2009 handheld title, the character selection is staggering, covering almost every major player in the series up to that point.
-
Local Co-op: Playing through the Master Road stages with a friend via Ad-Hoc is a blast and unique to this specific entry.
The Bad
-
Balance Issues: With 50+ characters and 4-player combat, the game is notoriously unbalanced. Certain projectiles and “Awakening” forms are significantly overpowered.
-
Chaos Factor: The 4-player battles can become incredibly cluttered on the small PSP screen, making it hard to track your character during a flurry of Jutsu.
