Phantasy Star Portable 2 (2010) is often cited as the pinnacle of the series on handhelds. It took the foundation of Phantasy Star Universe, stripped away the controversial “subscription-style” mechanics, and delivered a massive, feature-complete Action-RPG that felt more like the legendary Phantasy Star Online than anything that came before it.
Game Story & Premise
Set three years after the end of Phantasy Star Universe, the resource-depleted Gurhal System is facing a new crisis.
The Premise: You are a new recruit for Little Wing, a private mercenary group based on a space resort called Clad 6. Alongside your partner Emilia Percival, a girl with a mysterious link to an ancient spirit, you travel to various planets to investigate “Sub-space” anomalies and protect the system from the resurgence of the SEED and other cosmic threats.
Key Gameplay Innovations
Phantasy Star Portable 2 introduced several mechanics that became staples for the franchise:
-
Urgent Evasion (The Roll): For the first time, characters could perform a combat roll to dodge attacks. This shifted the gameplay from “stat-checking” to “skill-based” action.
-
Shield Blocking: Players could now equip shields to perform Perfect Blocks, which nullify damage and allow for powerful counter-attacks.
-
Charge Shots: Ranged weapons gained the ability to fire high-damage “Charge Shots,” making Rangers just as viable for boss-killing as Hunters.
-
No More Synthesis: Unlike the first game, you no longer had to wait real-world hours for items to “cook” in a machine. Weapons dropped as-is, and you could upgrade them instantly at the shop.
👥 The Four Races
Your choice of race significantly impacts your playstyle and your unique “Special Ability”:
| Race | Special Ability | Best Role |
| Human | Mirage Blast (Summons a giant spirit) | Jack-of-all-trades |
| Newman | Mirage Blast (Elemental focus) | Force (Technics/Magic) |
| Cast | SUV Weapon (Massive orbital lasers/cannons) | Ranger (Ranged) |
| Beast | Nanoblast (Transforms into a powerful monster) | Hunter (Melee) |
Secrets & Unlockables
-
The “True” Ending: To get the best ending, you must choose specific dialogue options when speaking to Emilia throughout the story. You must also complete all Side Story missions.
-
Hard Mode: Complete the Story Mode on Normal to unlock Hard Mode, which features higher-level drops and tougher enemy variations.
-
Partner Machines: Unlike the first game, you can now take “Partner Cards” of story characters (like Emilia, Yut, or even characters from PSO like Rico) into missions to fill out your 4-man party.
-
Collaboration Items: The game is famous for its cameos. Depending on the version, you can find gear from Vocaloid (Hatsune Miku), Fate/stay night, and Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Short Review: The Handheld King of Loot
The Good
-
The “Loot” Loop: With over 2,000 items and a satisfying “Red Box” drop sound, the dopamine hit of finding rare gear is unmatched on the PSP.
-
Combat Fluidity: The addition of dodging and blocking makes the combat feel modern and engaging.
-
Customization: The character creator is incredibly deep, and you can even decorate your private room with furniture found on missions.
The Bad
-
Camera Management: In tight spaces with large bosses, the camera can become a struggle, requiring frequent “tapping” of the L-button to reset the view.
-
End-Game Grind: Reaching Level 200 and finding the absolute rarest 16-star weapons requires hundreds of hours of repetitive “looping” of the same missions.
