The Idolm@ster SP: Wandering Star is one of three versions released simultaneously for the PlayStation Portable, serving as a portable “evolution” of the original arcade and Xbox 360 raising simulation formula.

As a “Newbie Producer” at 765 Production, your job is to guide one of these girls from obscurity to the top of the “Idol Ultimate” (IU) charts.
The gameplay is split into three main loops:

Lessons: Mini-games (rhythm-based or timing-based) that raise the idol’s stats in Vocal, Dance, and Visual categories.

Communication: Visual novel-style segments where you talk to your idol. Choosing the right responses builds “Memory Appeals” used during auditions.

Auditions/Performances: The climax of the week where you must appeal to judges in a rhythm-based competition to win fans and increase your Idol Rank.
Wandering Star introduces a Story Mode (replacing the standard 52-week limit of previous games) that focuses on the rivalry with 961 Pro, providing a more narrative-driven experience compared to the “Free Produce” mode.

The Good

Portable Polish: For a 2009 PSP title, the 3D models and animations are impressively fluid. The idols are incredibly expressive during conversations.

Engaging Story: The addition of a direct rival (Takane) adds much-needed tension and emotional stakes that were sometimes missing from the sandbox nature of the original.

Addictive Loop: Balancing your idol’s stress, stats, and schedule is a “just one more week” type of experience.
The Bad

Version Splitting: It’s a bit of a “Pokémon” tactic. If your favorite idol is Chihaya or Haruka, you’re out of luck; they are in Missing Moon and Perfect Sun, respectively.

Repetition: The mini-games for lessons can become tedious after the 50th time.

Language Barrier: Unless you speak Japanese or use a fan-translated ISO, the heavy focus on dialogue choices makes it difficult for English speakers to play “blind.”
Verdict: It is a classic for a reason. If you enjoy management sims and “anime-style” storytelling, it’s the definitive way to experience the early days of the franchise on the go.
