TRON: Evolution (2010) for the PSP is an interesting case in handheld gaming. While the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions were third-person parkour action games, the PSP version—developed by SuperVillain Studios—is a completely different game focused on “Grid Games,” turning the TRON experience into a collection of high-stakes gladiatorial vehicular and disc combat challenges.

Game Premise

The PSP version is less of a story-driven prequel and more of a “Championship” simulator. You play as a program entering the legendary Grid Games, the sporting events of the digital world. As you compete in various disciplines—Light Cycle racing, Tank battles, and Disc combat—you gain “Memory” to upgrade your program and rise through the ranks of the system.

While it lacks the cinematic “Anon” storyline of the console versions, it captures the neon-soaked competitive atmosphere of the TRON: Legacy film perfectly.

Back Cover Description

“Immerse yourself in the digital world of TRON. TRON: Evolution on the PSP pits you in a series of action-packed Game Grid challenges ranging from intense Light Cycle racing to strategic Tank battles and lethal Light Disc combat.

Victory is the only way to survive. With each win, your power grows, allowing you to customize your program’s stats and appearance. Master the arenas, outmaneuver your opponents, and claim your place as the ultimate Grid Game champion. Whether playing through the massive single-player quest or challenging up to 4 friends in wireless Ad-Hoc matches, the battle for the system starts here.

Your Disc. Your Cycle. Your Legacy.

⚙️Key Gameplay Mechanics

  • Grid Game Varieties: The game is divided into several distinct event types:

    • Light Cycles: Classic high-speed racing where you must use your light trail to “de-rez” opponents.

    • Light Tanks: Heavy, tactical combat where you navigate arenas and blast enemy tanks with powerful cannons.

    • Light Disc: 1v1 or free-for-all combat using your identity disc as a boomerang-style weapon.

    • Light Runners: Fast-paced vehicular combat featuring the agile 4-wheeled Runners.

  • Program Customization: As you win events, you earn “Memory” and “Versions” (Levels). You can spend these to upgrade your speed, defense, and offensive capabilities, or to unlock new skins for your vehicles.

  • Ad-Hoc Multiplayer: Supports up to 4 players for local wireless battles, allowing you to compete head-to-head in any of the Grid Game modes.

  • Visual Style: It replicates the TRON: Legacy aesthetic with glowing neon blues, oranges, and deep blacks, accompanied by a heavy electronic soundtrack inspired by the film’s score.

Short Review: A Different Kind of TRON

The Good

  • Focused Gameplay: By focusing on the “Grid Games” rather than the parkour-heavy combat of the consoles, the PSP version avoids the “clunky” platforming issues of its big brothers.

  • Vehicle Variety: The Light Tank segments are surprisingly deep and provide a nice change of pace from the frantic Light Cycle races.

  • Perfect for Pick-up-and-Play: Since the game is mission-based, it’s ideal for playing in short 5–10 minute bursts.

The Bad

  • Lack of Narrative: If you were looking for the “prequel story” that bridges the two movies, you won’t find much of it here; this is purely a competitive combat game.

  • Repetition: Because it is a collection of the same 4–5 event types, the gameplay loop can feel repetitive after a few hours of play.
