Undead Knights (2009) is a stylish, ultra-violent action game developed by Team Tachyon (now a part of Koei Tecmo). It is often described as a mix between Dynasty Warriors and Overlord, featuring a heavy metal aesthetic and a unique “necromancy” mechanic that lets you turn your enemies into a literal meat-shield.
-
Soundtrack: Features licensed heavy metal tracks from bands like Lamb of God, Slayer, and Mastodon.
💀 The Plot: Vengeance from the Grave
The story follows the House of Blood, a trio of noble knights who were brutally murdered by their King after questioning the influence of his mysterious new Queen, Fatima.
-
The Pact: As they lay dying, a demonic entity known as “The Beast” offers them a deal: life and the power of necromancy in exchange for their souls.
-
The Mission: You must fight through the King’s empire, turning his own loyal soldiers into mindless zombies to use as weapons against him.
Key Features: Commander of the Dead
The core hook of Undead Knights is that you are a one-man army supported by a 10-man squad of zombies.
-
Three Playable Characters:
-
Romulus: The eldest brother; uses a massive Greatsword. He is slow but deals the highest raw damage.
-
Remus: The younger brother; uses dual swords. He is the fastest character and plays similarly to Dante from Devil May Cry.
-
Sylvia: The daughter of the King and Remus’s bride; uses a scythe. She has the best reach and area-of-effect attacks.
-
-
Zombification (The Circle Button): By grabbing an enemy, you can turn them into a zombie. If you weaken them first (until they glow red), the conversion is instant and restores a small amount of health.
-
Zombie Tactical Commands:
-
Throwing: You can pick up a zombie and hurl it like a projectile to stun groups of enemies.
-
Structural Destruction: Point your reticle at a tower or wall and send your horde to tear it down.
-
Zombie Bridges/Ladders: In certain levels, your zombies will literally pile onto each other to form bridges or ladders for you to cross gaps.
-
Shielding: Hold a zombie in front of you to block incoming arrows and melee strikes.
-
Secrets & Unlockables
Undead Knights has a heavy focus on replaying levels to earn “Dark Energy” for upgrades.
The “Wrath” Gauge
Similar to a Musou attack, filling your Wrath meter allows you to unleash a devastating combo. Any enemy killed during this state is automatically converted into a zombie, allowing you to instantly replenish your squad during boss fights.
Cheat Codes & CWCheats
While there are no traditional “button-input” cheats in the retail menus, the game was a favorite for CWCheat users (for those using custom firmware/ISOs). Popular codes included:
-
Max Dark Energy:
0x2018B0D8 0x000F423F -
Infinite HP:
0x206B5BFC 0x43C80000 -
Unlock All Missions:
0xC00A2618 0x24050001
The “100 Hour” Title
The game features an achievement/title system. One of the most infamous “secrets” is the title awarded for playing the game for 100 total hours. This is widely considered a “troll” unlock, as the main campaign only takes about 6–8 hours to complete.
Short Review: Metal, Gore, and Grinding
The Good
-
Satisfying Mechanic: There is something genuinely funny and empowering about “sicking” a pack of zombies on a cowering commander.
-
Heavy Metal Vibe: The music and dark fantasy art style give the game a very distinct “edgy” 2000s personality.
-
Smooth Combat: Despite having many NPCs on screen, the game maintains a solid framerate.
The Bad
-
Repetitive Levels: Most levels consist of “Go here, kill X guards, break X tower.” It can feel like a chore by Chapter 15.
-
Clunky Camera: Like many PSP games, the camera is mapped to the D-Pad, making it difficult to adjust while moving.
-
Limited Zombie AI: Your zombies are, well, zombies. They often get stuck on geometry or target the wrong enemies if you aren’t constantly micro-managing them with the R-Trigger.
