WALL-E (2008) for the PSP is a faithful handheld adaptation of the Pixar masterpiece. While the “next-gen” versions on PS3 and Xbox 360 focused on open exploration, the PSP version (developed by Savage Entertainment) is a more structured 3D puzzle-platformer that follows the movie’s plot with surprising mechanical depth.
Story & Premise
The game spans 18 levels (twice as many as the PS3/360 versions) that mirror the journey of the lonely trash-compactor robot.
The Plot: After 700 years of cleaning up a deserted Earth, WALL-E encounters EVE, a high-tech probe searching for signs of life. When EVE is taken back to the starliner Axiom with a discovered plant, WALL-E hitches a ride across the galaxy. The PSP version includes unique scenes and creative liberties, such as WALL-E using music to “summon” rejected robots to help him bypass security on the ship.

Key Gameplay Mechanics
-
Cube Creation: WALL-E rolls over junk to create trash cubes. You can hurl these to hit switches, destroy obstacles, or create pathways. Some cubes are Explosive, requiring you to stand back before they blow!
-
Multi-Form Mechanics: * Box Form: WALL-E can shrink into a small cube to fit under low ledges or charge through breakable crates.
-
Laser Blaster: Used for combat and cutting through specific metal sheets in mini-games.
-
-
“Hello Dolly” Music: In the Axiom levels, WALL-E can play music to “charm” other bots. This allows you to command them to use their specialized tools, like flashlights or bounce platforms, to solve environmental puzzles.
-
EVE Flight Missions: These segments shift the gameplay to a fast-paced “tunnel-run” style, where you navigate EVE through obstacles and use her plasma cannon to clear the path.
-
Artifact Scanning: You can enter a First-Person View to scan your surroundings for “human artifacts” (like a fire extinguisher or a rubber ducky). Finding them unlocks funny vignettes in the bonus menu.
Short Review: A Charming Companion
The Good
-
Great Atmosphere: The bright, sunny visuals of Earth and the sleek neon of the Axiom look excellent on the PSP screen.
-
Variety: The mix of 3D platforming, racing, and shooting ensures the gameplay doesn’t get stale.
-
Authentic Sound: Featuring the voice of Ben Burtt and the movie’s iconic sound effects, it feels like a true extension of the film.
The Bad
-
Finicky Controls: Using the PSP’s analog nub for precise “half-pipe” jumps or platforming can lead to some frustrating falls.
-
Camera Issues: Like many 3D platformers of the era, the camera occasionally gets stuck behind walls or focuses on the wrong object.
