Tenchu: Shadow Assassins (2009) is the fourth mainline installment in the famous stealth-action franchise, developed by Acquire—the original creators of the series. Originally built for the Nintendo Wii, it was ported to the PlayStation Portable shortly after, redesigning the franchise’s mechanics into a methodical, line-of-sight puzzle brawler.

🥷 Story & Dual Protagonists

Set in feudal Japan, the plot follows legendary Azuma Ninja clan operatives Rikimaru and Ayame. Serving Lord Gohda, the duo must investigate corrupt officials, local bandit uprisings, and foreign spies, ultimately uncovering a plot involving the kidnapping of Princess Kiku.

  • Rikimaru: Heavily reliant on dark shadows, precise blade executions, and methodical movement.
  • Ayame: Faster and more agile, utilizing acrobatic stealth kills from rafters and ledge hangs.

⚙️ Core Gameplay: Shadows & Stealth Puzzles

Diverging from the open-ended 3D sandbox maps of earlier entries like Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven, Shadow Assassins plays more like a series of stealth-puzzle corridors.

  • Shadow & Light Mechanics: Light is your primary enemy. You can douse torches with water kunai or hide in shadows, high grass, rafters, and water barrels.
  • One-Hit Stealth Kills: Approaching an unaware enemy triggers context-sensitive, cinematic instant-kill prompts.
  • Ninja Tools & Shadow Sense: You utilize classic tools such as bamboo tubes (to breathe underwater), throw-able kunai, noise-making cats to distract guards, and Mind’s Eye (Shadow Sense) to view enemy patrol cones and heat signatures through walls.
  • First-Person Sword Dueling: If you are spotted, open combat shifts to a timed first-person blocking and slashing minigame rather than free-roaming hack-and-slash brawling.

⭐ Short Review: Solid Handheld Port with Polarizing Changes

The Good

  • Great Visuals & Atmosphere: Excellent lighting effects, character models, and authentic traditional music make it one of the better-looking stealth games on the PSP.
  • Better Controls than Wii: The PSP version replaces the Wii MotionPlus gestures with traditional button inputs for sword duels and executions, making combat feel much tighter.

The Bad

  • Linear Stage Design: The shift from free-roaming open maps to tight stealth puzzle rooms disappointed fans seeking classic open-ended Tenchu levels.
  • Clunky Sword Duels: Getting spotted forces a rigid sword-blocking minigame that disrupts the flow of stealth gameplay.
