Wild Arms XF (pronounced "Crossfire") (2007) is a spin-off of Media.Vision's weird-west RPG series, developed by Media.Vision and published by XSEED Games exclusively for the PlayStation Portable. Diverging from the traditional turn-Based JRPG style of the mainline entries, it translates the series' wild-west fantasy aesthetic into a tactical RPG built around a hexagonal grid.
🤠 Story & Premise: The Kingdom of Elesius
The dying world of Filgaia is plagued by endless wilderness and political strife. In the Kingdom of Elesius, the King falls ill, and a corrupt Council of Senate members seizes control, plunging the populace into misery.
You play as Clarissa Arwin, an optimistic young woman traveling with her bodyguard Fyre. Clarissa seeks revenge against a man named Rupert, who murdered her mother and stole her family's sacred weapon, the Iskender Bey. Her journey takes a dramatic turn when she is mistaken for the missing Princess Alexia, thrusting her into leading a rebel faction known as the "Blanks" to liberate the kingdom.
⚙️ Core Mechanics & Hexagonal Combat
HEX Combat System: Battles take place on a map divided into hexagonal tiles (HEXes). Positioning is critical; surrounding an enemy on opposing sides triggers powerful Formation Attacks, amplifying damage.
Class System & Skill Transfer: Features over 16 unique classes (such as Geomancer, Secutor, Gadgeteer, and Excavator). Characters can equip passive and active skills learned from previous classes to craft custom hybrid builds.
Puzzle-Like Objective Variety: Rather than simply defeating all enemies, missions feature diverse, puzzle-style victory conditions—such as escaping within a turn limit, escorting VIPs, infiltrating bases undetected, or manipulating terrain.
VP (Vitality Points) Limit: To prevent excessive turtling, characters consume Vitality Points each turn. Running out of VP drains HP, forcing aggressive, decisive tactics.
⭐ Short Review: Deep Strategy, Unforgiving Difficulty
The Good
Engaging HEX Mechanics: The hexagonal grid and formation attacks make combat feel distinct from square-grid SRPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics.
Extensive Build Variety: Combining class skills offers deep strategic flexibility for party customization.
The Bad
Rigid Map Objectives: Certain stages heavily require specific class setups to win, leaving little room for experimental team compositions.
Steep Learning Curve: Spikes in battle difficulty require careful planning and grinding for skills.
