Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (2009) is a unique entry in the series that returns to the classic top-down perspective of the original games while utilizing modern 3D rendering. Originally a Nintendo DS hit, the PSP version was released as a “Director’s Cut” with enhanced visuals, new missions, and a more cinematic presentation.

Game Story & Premise

Set in modern-day Liberty City (the same city from GTA IV), the story follows Huang Lee, the spoiled son of a recently murdered Triad boss.

The Plot: Huang arrives in Liberty City to deliver a family heirloom—the “Yu Jian” sword—to his Uncle Kenny to ensure his family maintains control of the Triad gangs. However, upon landing, Huang is ambushed, shot, and dumped in the river, and the sword is stolen. Now, he must navigate the city’s corrupt underworld to recover the heirloom, avenge his father, and reclaim his family’s honor.

The sword is gone. The war has begun.

PSP Exclusive Enhancements

While the DS version relied on touch-screen gimmicks, the PSP version took advantage of the more powerful hardware:

  • Updated Graphics: The cel-shaded “comic book” look was swapped for high-resolution textures, real-time dynamic lighting, and enhanced bloom effects.

  • Widescreen View: The camera was retooled for the 16:9 PSP screen, allowing you to see more of the action and incoming police threats.

  • New Content: Includes a new story chain involving a character named Melanie Mallard, along with extra Rampages and unique radio stations.

  • Mini-game Overhaul: Touch-screen tasks (like unscrewing car panels or assembling sniper rifles) were converted into fluid, rhythm-based QTEs (Quick Time Events) using the analog nub and buttons.

Key Gameplay Mechanics

  • Drug Dealing: A deep economic sub-game. You track market trends across different neighborhoods to trade Heroin, Acid, Ecstasy, and more to fund your weapon purchases.

  • Innovative Wanted System: Instead of just outrunning the “zone,” you lose wanted stars by aggressively ramming police cars and forcing them to crash.

  • PDA System: Your in-game menu is a virtual PDA where you receive emails, check the map, and order weapons from Ammu-Nation for delivery to your safehouse.

  • The “Yu Jian” Sword: Unlike most GTAs, the plot centers around a specific physical object, giving the narrative a focused, “quest-like” feel.

Short Review: The “Classic” Reimagined

The Good

  • Incredible Depth: Despite the top-down view, it features a fully living world with weather cycles, pedestrians, and complex AI.

  • Addictive Economy: The drug-dealing mechanic is so well-integrated that you might find yourself spending hours just playing the “stock market” of the streets.

  • Writing: The dialogue is some of the sharpest and most cynical in the series, perfectly capturing Huang’s transition from spoiled rich kid to hardened criminal.

The Bad

  • Camera Angle: If you grew up only on the 3D-era GTA games (like Vice City), the top-down perspective can take some time to get used to.

  • No Helicopters: Due to the fixed camera angle, you cannot fly aircraft in this game (except for one specific mission).
